I had a strange smell coming from my vents as well when I first got the truck. It was an odd smell, usually after I washed it. Eventually it went away. Now I just get the typical A/C smell.

But, my AC now smells great with NO smell - what did I do??? Went and bought a 2014 GMC Sierra!!!!!
I got rid of the smell by ramming a couple of feet of mechanics wire up the drain hole. And then I laid 100 lbs of air to it. I can see it draining water now. But to the point. Me and my wife buy many new vehicles and mostly Fords. If that smell comes back and the service guys tell me they're going to tear out my dash, I will be doing what this poster did.

Default Strange odor from dash vents

This a message for Ford Representative, Crystal. I have tried to provide you the information you requested from your post above but have been unable to. I phone the 800 number and provided the info the answering rep. They provided a case number for the regional manager to contact the dealership.

I would suggest that all others having this particular problem do the same.

I don't know, I think everyone is making too much of this, I have a sort of a gamey, farm type of smell that comes out of the vents when I first start my truck, it only lasts about a minute, it is a different smell, but it goes away no big deal. I am a cigar smoker, so my truck has a smoky smell at times so I guess the farm animal smell is no big deal to me.

There is another thread "strange smell" that relates to this odor.
Band Aids is what most say this smells like. No fix yet but some say it is an HVAC issue with evaporator coil, maybe refrigorant lubricant leak or mold from poor condensate drain design.

I have a 2011 FX4 5.0 . We have had a lot of rainy and damp days recently. Every time I start the engine, I get a smell that smells like cow poop from the vents. Usually goes away after 30-60 seconds. After reading this thread, I'm guessing it's mold. I have not used the A/C much since last year.

Hi mbednar,

It looks like you don't have PM privileges just yet, but it sounds like you reached out to our Customer Relationship Center and they took care of you. I'm glad to hear that things are progressing!

Since you're in Canada, Biggles, I recommend reaching out to my Canadian colleagues on the forum: FordServiceCA. Here's a link to their profile: https://www.f150forum.com/members/fordserviceca-150023/

There seems to be at least three threads going on this topic. Some people don't care or choose to ignore the smell but mine is my daily driver so I prefer not to have my truck smell like a barn. My work order below has fixed it but it's a pretty extensive job to have the evap changed out and the other thread has some pictures in it of a Ford tech changing it out. The deodorizing treatment is just a band-aid fix and the evap replacement long term change out is still unknown but for now my truck smells new again at start up.

The other thread discussing this is here:
