Insurance not paying for something because you didn't have a locking mechanism is dumb on their part. That's like saying if someone busted your window and stole your truck, they aren't going to pay for it because you didn't have bulletproof glass. I thought that's why we pay for insurance just for cases like this. So if it indeed have a lock but it was unlocked, would they still pay for it....how would they know....that's ridiculous. Sorry for your bad luck hope it works out for you.

I think the manufacturers are hip to it. That's why tailgates are so expensive and even after several years of theft issues they have not made them more difficult to remove. Who really removes their tailgate so often that it needs to be that easy?

Don't know the make but there is an aftermarket tailgate lock that is like a padlock to go around the passenger side pivot point. If you can't cut that off you can't get the tailgate off.
