Steering wheel popping over bumps/rough terrain
#591
2011 Short bed Platinum, Eco Crew.
My original steering gear didn't have any popping until I had about 2,000 miles on it. Second Steering gear I got about 1,000 miles and that one, the one currently on the truck, is now popping. Took it back to the dealer and they had it for the day, Ford said for me to drive a like truck and if it popped the dealer was to do nothing.
So the service writer gave me a used 2011 Lariat, Crew, Eco to drive. This truck didn't have the popping in the steering. It also has 13,XXX miles on it and for reference my truck is under 5,500 miles. The difference between my truck and the Lariat is the steering wheel adjustment is electric on mine and manual on a Lariat. SO, just so that couldn't be brought up the new car lot had a 2011 Platinum, Eco crew and I drove that as well and no popping in that one either.
My service writer said that is what he needed to know and now I have to wait for a shared among dealers NVH machine to come to my dealer so they can pinpoint where the popping is coming from.
I'll update later.

Ohh and as an FYI the dealer has had my truck for two weeks now, they can't figure it out. They are apprently flying a senior engineer out on Monday to help diagnose the issue.

Mine is a 2012 platinum and this is the only annoying thing about it. Bought it with 40 miles, it currently has 79, did it off the lot, I thought it was just a truck thing until reading this thread as my old silverado did this (03 gmt 800 series) Everything else is awesome.

My 2012 FX4 has manual telescoping steering wheel and does the clunk on small bumps when weather temperature rises. Ford mechanics cliam it is normal, but I doubt it, thing is they don't know what is going on and bet t
hey don't make money for the dealer fixing issues that are still under warrenty.

That is very interesting my truck also has the electronic steering adjustment controls and I have the popping issue. Anyone not have that option and still have the popping issue?

It was 90+ degrees this past weekend in MS and the popping was worse than ever. I know it's been mentioned before that lot of people buying these new trucks have no idea about this problem. I was one of them. Does anyone think by using social media i.e. Facebook, Twitter, or Youtube to get the word out to potential buyers would help and make Ford do something about this problem.

i had this same scenario. just as a heads up... make sure your truck is stock. if it's not stock, the field engineer will request that aftermarket parts are taken off (level kit, etc) and the dealer will offer to charge if they have to do it. if you leave the aftermarket parts on... they will blame it on the aftermarket parts.
