I started looking at every F 150 I can and it seems every one of them has this cable with slack in it. Not sure if yours does but seems kind of odd. Oh well my new truck is still light years better than the gov't motors I traded for it!
Yes, the cable on my right side has the same slack in it. I thought that was odd also. You have the "man" step correct? This seems to be related to that tailgate only, because it has the bent over metal where the weld WAS! I will report back tomorrow. Maybe I can get rid of the man step and get a regular tailgate, chit, you can't even sit on that damn thing.

that is because there is a torsion bar/spring inside the tailgate that helps you to lift it up when you close it, when you put weight on the tailgate it will sit flat.

Why did they leave the barrel hinge design? It worked great for years...

UPDATE

Ford is replacing the entire tailgate with a new one. Waiting for it to come in. There were no questions asked about getting a new one, but got the " I've never seen that before" by the auto body shop manager. Should be in this week I hope.

Default Update

Well, they screwed up my tailgate. After asking about replacing the manstep with a regular tailgate, they said no and we agreed to get the replacement manstep tailgate. After NOT hearing from the dealership for over 2 weeks I took a ride down, saw the bodyshop manager and he said, I have the REGULAR tailgate and its all painted and ready to go. After a brief conversation on the regular tailgate I relunctantly said, lets do it. After the install my camera does NOT work and there is no bed cover on the tailgate. He told me, oh thats the way it comes. Well, I had a bed cover installed on the truck when I bought it and need the truck every day for work. Hell, the cover would have cost him about $30.00! The icing on the cake was I got NO PAPERWORK on the warranty issue and the camera does not work! Go in with 1 warranty issue and come out with a mess! I now have a regular tailgate, a camera that does not work and am out the $375 that I originaly paid for the manstep.

More on this after I visit the dealership today.

you should never have accepted it without the step or cover if that's how you originally purchased it. Go back and make them do it again or give you cash back.
