Default Spare tire

Fellows,

I bought a new truck in March and it has the chrome clad 20" wheels on it. I have the Lariat package with all the pretty stuff.

Now my question. Yesterday I got a flat tire so I had to put the spare on. I find out that the spare is a Goodyear Wrangler AT/S 18".........not a 20" like the 4 that came on the truck.

In fact the tires that came on the truck are Bridgestone Duelers. Both tire circumferences are about 31.250......Ok

what's with not giving me a matching tire of at least the same size and brand????? Confusing to me why the 5 tires are not the same?

thank you for reading let me know what your thoughts are

Be happy it came with any kind of spare tire. Some vehicles come with no spare tire, just a can of fix a flat.

Welcome to mass production. Ford most likely puts the same spare tire on every truck, or at least the same diameter spare as the other four. I can't remember ever seeing anything but a basic steel wheel for a spare. Also, chrome rims are an upgrade that people pay for. Most would not pay for a chrome rim to be a spare. It spends 99% of its life where no one can see it. The economics of if doesn't work out for it to happen, large scale.

WAD - Working As Designed
  • the diameter of the spare wheel is the same as the wheels on the ground.
    .
  • the spare wheel is intended for "temporary" use until the damaged wheel is repaired/replaced.
    .
  • the spare wheel does not have a TPMS sensor.
    and again ...

I would rather that than having a donut tire like a car

Interesting situation...

Curious what my special ordered FX4 will come equipped with. I specified standard FX18" wheels/P-metric tires knowing I'd replace at least the tires right away. Actually, bought a set of 5 Raptor 17" wheels Friday, so will buy new LT285/70R17 for those and sell the FX wheel/tire combos "as-is". I figured all would be identical for those who prefer 5-way rotation cycle. My Frontier came with 5 matching 8 yrs ago, so figured same deal on the Ford F150.

I think most of us that have trucks understand what a spare is. I don't think you have to explain it to us.

But you say temporary, well it's a full size tire. It's a Goodyear Wrangler, no where on it does it say temporary like a dounut tire.

This is my first Ford, and I like it but being a previous Toyota buyer all wheels on the last 3 SR5 trucks were full size Aluminum wheels that matched with matching tires. Here again the Toyotas have TPMS in the spare also. Because if you don't check it often it will let you know if it's low on air so you don't have a flat when you need to use the spare.

I know go buy a Toyota....that's not my point. My point is I"m old enough to know what a vehicle like a truck should come with. They're TRUCKs not cars. I've been buying trucks for 38 years and a matching spare should be one of the items. I don't mind if the wheel is steel. My bitch is why put an 18 inch spare tire in a $55000,00 truck when it came with 20" rims.

For instance here i could have put the spare tire on my chrome rim but I can't. I have to buy another new tire because of the cut in the side wall. And I still have a 200.00 spare getting beat up under the rear of the bed.

Besides I'm only asking it this is the cycle of what Ford does. That was the intent of my question.
