The spare keys are nice! I hid them on my truck so I shouldn't ever have to worry about not being able to access it.

I am very new to this, and hardly know anything about spare keys...

So basically, your $16 dollar investment will allow you to only get inside your truck, not start it?

Why would you have to reprogram anything?!!?

thanks!

NO! My (2) spare keys allow me to access and start the truck just like a normal key would. They are just plain keys, no keyfob built in.

As long as you have the factory (2) keys, you can program additional keys. stevebass4 posted above in response #4.

I bought a couple of the plain 80 bit keys on eBay for my 2011 STX with the IKT keys and had a hassle programming them. I followed the instructions in the manual to the letter and the new keys would not program. I fooled with them for 15 or 20 minutes before finally trying locking and unlocking the doors with the IKT and then following the programming instructions. Doing it that way worked. Locking and unlocking the doors with the inside door lock before doing the programming sequence did not work.

I just finished buying a spare key for $9.99 on Ebay. I usually keep a spare key in a magnetic key box which I keep attached to the frame. Just to use in an emergency.

A question on the non remote keys that are cut to the lock cylinder but with no remote buttons. If you use the key to manually unlock the drivers door, doesn't a message come on in the dash saying "to stop alarm start vehicle"? My 2014 does this when I remote lock the truck, then manually unlock it and open the door.

Unfortunately, no. The programming procedure calls for two already programmed keys to be able to program additional keys. I know, I bought mine new and only got one key. Had to go back to the dealer to get an additional key for my truck. See, there's a module in the steering column that reads the keys when you insert them into the ignition. A non-programmed key will open the door but when you put it into the ignition the only thing that happens is the guages come to life, but the truck won't start. Also, if you keep trying to get the truck to start with a non-programmed key you can get locked out. It's a theft deterent. This all is according to the Ford tech I spoke with.

XMP64 is right, you need two programmed keys to program a new key. I just bought my 2011 STX about a month ago from the used car lot of a local Ford dealer and it only came with one key. I bugged the dealer until they finally gave in and made me a spare key for free. You might try asking the dealer to make you a spare programmed key for free. Won't hurt to ask (several times).

FYI, you can program a separate FOB and the add-on door entry keypad with only one programmed key.
