Pat,
I'm actually leaving from Leesburg, VA. next Monday. My son lives there. Laptops will be packed and I'll let you know how I do.

In actually have been proved to that going up from 87 octane to 89 octane on a trip will give you 3-4 more mpg on a long trip.

That is incorrect. Quite the opposite in reality. Running a higher octane fuel in a vehicle than it is designed/tuned for will actually lead in inefficient burning of the fuel and if anything lower your mileage. That said, before I knew the facts I too ran higher octane (more $$ but be better right?) and never noticed a difference one way or the other.

Oh, to the OP. That Expedition had A LOT more weight in the back end so even without losing the AWD you would have noticed a decrease in traction. I'm positive you'll adjust to the difference and be fine though. Judging from how long you apparently keep vehicles you'll have PLENTY of time.

Congrats on the new ride!!

I too upgraded from a 99 4x4 Expy to a 2011 F150 XLT SCREW. I still drive the Expy (errands) and its night-and-day difference.

I almost have 500 miles on the F150, but I'm not paying attention to gas mileage yet. I'll start monitoring it soon, though the Fuel Economy computer said I was getting 22mpg on a recent 100 mile highway trip, and I was varying speed throughout the trip.

One thing I've noticed is that the plastic gauge cover behind the steering wheel seems to scratch easily -- the new car prep team put one scratch in it (they buffed it out so it isn't as visible), and I must have put another scratch in it while cleaning it with a micro-fiber cloth. Hmmmm..

This is my first time using Sync, but it seems a little buggy -- one day last week, Sync went brain-dead when I started the truck, and wouldn't do anything. I had to restart the truck, and then Sync came back to life. It's Microsoft, eh.... probably got a blue screen of death.

EDIT: I'm a cheap cellphone user, and have been using Tracfone. I'm switching to Net10 (owned by Tracfone) since they have better phones for my area. The Samsung R335C works great with Sync via Bluetooth. I'll just use it for making phone calls, 911 Assist, and the "vehicle health report" (which seems to be very dumbed down application, though maybe I'm wrong).

Default Octanes

I was hoping for a little better mileage over my 2001, which is why I went with 3.55 gears instead of 3.73, so I figured I'd play with brands and octanes until I was happy. I usually use Exxon, FWIW.

The Owner's Manual says that the truck is designed to run normally on 87, and that premium fuel will provide improved performance (p. 392).

Is that a no-no with a FFV-capable engine?

Perhaps you have a 2009? In the 2010 OM it says repeatedly to use 87 octane and then reinforces the point by saying to ALWAYS use the recommended octane level fuel. It also strongly recommends AGAINST any fuel additives. Interesting.

Not a 2009. Three week old truck. OM was sitting in front of me as I typed. 2011s have the same engine that is in the 2011 Mustang, but w/ diff tuning.
