I'm going to have to deal with the same issue. I've been waiting for the iPad Mini 2 but now there are reports of it being different sizing compared to the original and the release was pushed to Dec 22. I might end up just biting the bullet and buying the original Mini.. Sucks.

I take it there's no way to use a reverse camera with the iPad, correct?

There is always a way, but in this case, it might not be easy. The iPad has no video input, so you would need to use a camera that can transmit video through bluetooth or wifi. Then you would need an application on the iPad to display the transmitted image, and finally, you would need some way of detecting when the car is in reverse (perhaps tie into the reverse lights) and switch the iPad application to the camera. Nothing rocket science, but considering you can buy an aftermarket rear view mirror with a backup camera setup for under $100, might not be worth the trouble.

Yes you can, the dash controls are a separate piece from the actual head unit. The limitation is that without the dash controls your limited to presets on your sirius and radio stations, clock settings and audio settings. sync is accessed with voice commands. I Re routed the cable for the dash controls to the glove box area and just plug in the controls if I need to change any of the presets or set the time. Basically, your locked into whatever you can control with the steering wheel controls.

For an ipad2, take a look at the TKO_818 thread on ipad dash pieces for members. He custom fabricates them. This is because there's a bunch of stuff that needs to be moved like the traction control switch, plus a custom dash kit. I bought a mini and a metra double DIN, fit like a glove with some double side tape.

4G mini with dash command, navigation apps google voice (works with sync) and it's well worth the investment of ~$400.

Also, keeping with the thread. My apps are:

Talkatone - connects with google voice, a cool service and looks like a phone to sync if you connect with bluetooth. Uses wifi, so you can make voice calls without a voice plan

Dash Command - with a cheap obdii wifi reader gives you all of your trucks information

ITunes Radio - pandora competition

LeechTunes - sweet looking music skin

General>Accessibility>Assistive Touch - lock screen without having to access the top button (good since there's no IOS 7 jailbreak)

Flight radar24 - flight tracking app that displays what planes are flying overhead. Can see where they departed and landing, speed, altitude, etc.

Seagatemedia - I have a wifi drive with all my movies burned to it. Streams to 5 devices at a time. I Keep the hard drive in the center console and the wife and kids can watch movies on long trips or waiting in Parking lots. Not recommended for folks that are easily distracted

Navigon -I was a waze fan, but I have had a navigon app for years, I just started using it again and it's actually pretty good and saves some data usage since the maps are downloaded to the ipad.

Spotify - download and/or stream just about any song or album for like $5/month

It's a shame there isn't a better way. I have the upgraded package from Ford with the touchscreen and Sony audio and other than the reverse camera, it was a pretty big waste of money. If there was a way to have the reverse camera flawlessly function on the iPad, I'd rip the entire system out and go that route.
