so what makes an HD payload truck HD?

IMO Ford's GVWR is more marketing hype than reality. A Screw 5.0 has a GVWR of 7350 while the same EB has a GVWR of 7200. Then there's the 7700 GVWR F150's.

So it seems to me that the wheels themselves are the weak link from a "rated weight" standpoint. My question is has anyone actually seen a wheel fail due to load/tire pressure? I never have in 20+ years of driving. Is loading a wheel rated at 2025# to 2400 really a concern?

i have a 2014 lariat heavy duty. my gvw is 8200. and i have actually used it for a 2500 lb pallet several times. i did put on supersprings though.

Your linked image is interesting to me in that 17x8.5 Raptor wheels have 10% greater load capacity than "regular" F150 wheels. Maybe I should raise my asking price on the set of 5 I bought (but didn't install) for my truck...

Wannafbody - The above chart lists an aluminum wheel as an option.

I would say the Off Road package is more marketing than the HD package. With you just get a different decal, "off road tuned shocks" and a skid plate (made of foam?). The gears and e-locker can be had with other configs.

The HD gets stiffer springs but you can get the same thing by adding Superprings on the rear and coilovers on front. Some Supersprings are rated for an extra 2000#. Think about it like this, if you have a F150 and need more springrate it's cheaper to add it to the f150 than to spend 45K for a F250 or 350.
