so what have you 5.4 guys done to upgrade your engine

i would like to do some engine upgrades to improve power and or torque, wondering what people have done. im not talking about intakes that improve by like maybe 5 hp.

Randy_270 08-29-2011 01:47 AM

I did a k&n cold air intake, magnaflow catback exhaust and a superchips tuner with the cold air intake tune on my 2010 fx4 and i notice a pretty big difference. cost me about $1200 and truck leaves about 40 feet of rubber on the road without using the brakes now. so if going from just chirping the tires to leaving about 40 feet of rubber on the road isnt a big enough difference for you then hope you have lots of money for a supercharger. good luck with your mods.

steelhauler 08-29-2011 05:06 AM

Traded it in for the ecoboost lol

Jus Cruisin 08-29-2011 07:53 AM

Zero. If I have to sell my Roush (nerve issue has made my right hand and arm kinda useless right now), I will supercharge the truck. That will hopefully feed my need for speed. If I get this nerve thing cured, I will leave the truck engine alone.

rmrc51 08-29-2011 08:13 AM

Not a damn thing, lol. She has more than plenty of power for all my needs!

8litercobra 08-29-2011 10:27 AM

Like you RMR, I haven't done anything, and am satisfied with the factory set-up. I love to see what other folks are doing with their trucks, but I'm too old and slow to burn 'em down any more.

Yep, I'm in the same boat as you. Couldn't agree with you more! ;)

maybe "you cant" but i can and i did.

Randy_270 08-29-2011 05:35 PM

PRNDL yes it was just the superchips with the k&n cold air intake tune. cost me an extra $8 and you can download the tune after you buy and install the superchips tuner on your truck. Just plug the superchips tuner into your comptuer after you install the tune on your truck and the option to buy cold intake tunes will appear. make sure to have the intake already in before you retune for it though.

Show me a vid.

What gears? What engine? 2 or 4wd? Cab/bed configuration?

There is no way you laid 40ft of rubber, not touching the brakes, on dry pavement, with only a supercrap tuner, exhaust, and a cai

foxracer2759 09-20-2011 08:57 PM

well first off i said no stupid intake crap. you didnt lay down 40 feet of rubber from a intake. and i wouldnt have posted this to know you guys think you have enough power. these truck deff have enough power but im the type of guy that always wants more, i know im gonna have someone say you dont need that in a truck but i don't really care its what i want in MY truck.. i was vagely thinking about cams or maybe headers and i know a tuner is down the road. id like to supercharge it but thats alot of dough

ak_cowboy 09-20-2011 10:23 PM

Cams are usually one of the last upgrades cuz they don't make a lot of power by themselves, but help make power when added onto everything else.

Long tube headers will definitely give you some more low end torque, also be able to help support more power from future upgrades.

I would order a Gryphon or get a 5 Star tune first and go from there.

KazK 09-20-2011 10:32 PM

Just the Banks cat-back. Plan on bringing it to Stang-Hi in BR for custom tune/dyno.

PerryO 09-20-2011 11:23 PM

Mods!

I own a 2010 SCSB with the 5.4 and 3.55 rear. It has a custom exhaust with a weld in flowpro muffler and a Gryphon CS tuner from Power Hungry Performance. http://gopowerhungry.com/

The performance difference is night and day. Throttle response is instant and the transmission shifts so much better plus the best feature of all is I average almost 20 MPG hand calculated.

My 2010 FX4 Screw 5.4 is running on a Edelbrock E force, custom tune and 2.72 pully. Right at 450 hp on the ground and an amazing 505 fpt. Cat back 40 series flowmaster. Raped ape fast. I relly need to post some vids.

Ummm. Yes, yes you do.

texterror81 01-30-2012 04:36 PM

You know Idk why ppl knock the 5.4 all the time but honestly i think its good torquey engine it responds well to boost(supercharger/turbo) and I've seen some videos on YouTube of these motors all done up (cams, heads, tuned, ect) and they seem to respond well.now im not saying its the perfect engine (spark plugs a pain and gas mpg's not so good) but its a good reliable engine that has a good torque curve for good towing.

RRF150 01-30-2012 05:26 PM

I put full syn oil in it and gained .25 HP and .17 TQ. Don't notice any mpg improvment though.

How did you measure this?

No offense but I fine that had to believe. Especially since I have the same truck 2010 fx4 sc 3.73 with the exact same mods. I will say it did make a big difference but nothing close to 40 ft of rubber on dry with out a the brake. I would need to see a video of this. I dought the guy with the e-force supercharge can do that!!!

Just seat of the pants feel.

I just put a GT bullydog 3 tuner on my Ecoboost but it's compatible for the 5.4 too.. I've gone up about 30 hp and 30 torque, it helps a lot with the bigger tires on my lift. .. It's about $469 and well worth, sits on the dash and has a touch screen, can set whatever gauges you want on it for temperature, speed, boost, fuel economy whatever! Also can do performance testing such as time a 0-60 , and also took the limiter off so even though it's not a good idea on my mud terrains my truck is capable of 150 mph now. Well worth the money IMO.

JCooper 01-30-2012 07:05 PM

Volant CAI, Magnaflow cat-back, and a SuperChips programmer. By the way.., does anyone know if I can use a tune for a different CAI, since there isn't a tune for a Volant system?

90% of CAIs are the same so the tunes should work fine. The only ones that would be different are a Ram Air intake in which you're forcing more air than normal.

This is a 5.4 discussion, I don't want no Eco stink getting on it.

Also, Tuners/exhaust/CAI have all been discussed already.
