Default Extang for me!

Due to a job lay-off and then a new job, I had to move from Florida to Washington state in 2011. My employer moved my belongings, but I drove my 2009 Ford F-150 across the country.

As a result, I began to research bed covers to protect the items I needed to carry with me in the bed. I wanted something that was strong, secure and looked good on my truck - I chose the Extang.

I've now had the cover for nearly four years, and I'm on my second F-150, a 2012 and still use the same Extang.

I've not had one issue with the cover. No leaks, nothing has broke, it still looks great, it's strong and secure. What more could you ask for!

I've had the Extang on my 2012 F150 for over 2 years. Looks and works like the day I got it. No leaks and really like the way it
works. Would buy one again.

I picked up an Extang off CL for $250 last night, what a steal. I could see a little light out the front, I'm gonna see of the gaskets mold into place. Maybe I'll put some weather strip on to fill the gap, either way it's agaisnt the cab where the gap is so not much will get in that way. It's got hail damage but other than that it looks brand new, and now I don't have to cry the first time I ding it 😎.

Very solid cover, I love being able to close the tailgate with the top locked down.

Man i'm not currently looking to buy a bed cover, I just wanted to say that is one comprehensive, in-depth review of bed covers. Thank you. We need more like this on the board

I've ruled BacFlip <anything> out but have a couple of questions for those with the Extang Solid Fold. How is that aluminum skin standing up to scratches and dents over the years? Is it powder-coated or just painted? Since there's only 4 plastic latches holding it down (2 when opened), how well does the cover stay down at highway speeds - can you visually see gaps along the sides? Thanks.

I can't speak for the finish, I can tell you Hail does a number on it but all the paint is intact without any splits or chips.

The top seems to do just fine at 80 on the highway, and there's really no gaps on the sides unless the weather stripping is missing like in my case.

I do have an issue with the front of the bed by the cab, it doesn't look like the weather stripping wants to fully seat, there's a gap between the plastic bedrails and the bare front of the bed. I may just run weather strip clear across if something doesn't change.

Look at these two covers I feel that most of the BAK products lack quality. Just looking at pics and reading reviews alot of people having issues with the seals on the outside sides start pealing off and looking at the rails ends in owners pics looks to me that it's unfinished bare metal look.

There is a thread on here on the new BAK Revolver x2 and just looking at the pics on that has that same issue with the end of the rails near the tail gate looks like it's just cut and unfinished.

For me it would be the Extang Solid Fold 2.0 or the Retrax MX Pro. I have owned the original Extang Solid Fold and loved it and the fact it can be removed completely is great. Of course the Retrax Pro MX would pretty much be a fix item but not really liking how much space it takes up in the bed but it looks great.

Here is something to consider not previously mentioned. If you have need to use your truck for hauling heavy or cumbersome equipment or just haul large objects over rough terrain there is a VERY good chance you will bang these items against the bed rails. If you have a BAKflip with the rails they will be more likely than not be damaged and have to be replaced. With the Extang, just remove the entire unit. Takes about 3 minutes and set it aside.
I do carry large objects over rough areas and I can assure you no matter how hard you try to secure them, these things will move around. Those Bakflip or any like manufacturer guide rails ARE NOT very durable from a side impact with something heavy and solid.
Reason I acquired the EXtang 2.0.
Very satisfied. If you do not require the use of your truck in this manner then no biggie.

I’m looking at the Xtang. I owned a BAKFlip Xd for 7 years. The things I didn’t like about the BAKFlip was I had to run a tube into the bed liner. This put moisture under the bed liner. The BAKFlip leaked. It got heavier with time and got where it was very heavy to open. The rail clamps would come loose and and fall into the bed and cause the cover to sag. The problem got worse with age. The top of the cover would burn your hand it got so hot. The rod holders for putting the cover all the way up fell apart and the rods would just hang. The cover also had a bad habit of shifting and needing adjustment This was all on my 2011 full size bed XLT. I just purchased a 2018 XLT short bed. I looked at the BAKFlip, Gator which looked about the same and didn’t like the idea of having to run tubing and drill holes. So I really want to know from anyone who has had the Xtang or any other cover how well it has held up.
