should I be worried about buying an Ecoboost?

Just pulled the plug on a new 2014 FX4 screw with ecoboost. Trading in my 2011 ecoboost. Never had an issue with it. Could have gone with the 5.0 but the ecoboost is such a torquey engine. With all the incentives in place I had to do it. Dealer inventories are slowly diminishing as you can't build a truck anymore.

Those statements steered me away from an eco and I went with an 8.
Just now did alittle more research and found that if you get the eco with 3.15 axle, mpg are good. I do not know the trade off with going with another axle.
I looked at a fuel tracking site and found both eco and 5.0 some of each are good... others not so good. I guess with both engines, you need to drive with a feather foot?? That or gear ratio plays a key role in performance and mpg??
I've got 5.0 /3.55 and get around 19 mostly highway.. this last tank is running 16 with mostly city
Bottom line, for OP.. Spend more time than I did and research for your own needs and get what you feel would serve you best.. Can't go wrong with either motor

I had the same lingering question. I went with the simpler 5.0 and did the SCT 5 star 87 performance tune. No lingering questions and happy as can be. The fact that you did the research and still have a lingering question is a consideration. Some folks never look back and just enjoy the ride day to day. And some tend to keep the ? in the back of their head if there ever was a doubt.. I am one of the latter, especially given I put 265K on a previous truck (5.4), and only let it go to give it to someone that needed financial help. Not that there are any guarantees with the 5.0, but it is the more proven and simpler motor and I did not want to deal with a lingering question going forward. It is really an individual decision and sometimes more involved than "which is the better motor?". I am sure you will have a great truck either way.

Never said "proven", just "more proven". As far as I know, it has been in development about 2 years longer, plus the basic technology is more similar to the previous generations than the turbos for Ford. Two years of real world tweaking matters to me. Certainly a technology leap still in many areas, but It certainly has had less birthing pains than the eco-boost. Not slamming the ecoboost at all. Even if I am off a bit on my dating, the turbos do add another level of technology to prove out over the long haul. Again, I think either is a great truck.

The EB is quite simply, the BEST engine in a 1/2 ton in the
market. You can compare HP and maximum torque all day long between Ford, GM and
Dodge. It's when you look at the torque CURVES that the EB just trounces every other
engine available.....bar none.
You can easily get 18-19 mpg in town and 20-21 on the highway (at 65 mph) with the EB,
but it does take a disciplined right foot. When you want or need the low rpm power of the
EB, it just steps to the front of the class and TOWS.

on all Chicago suburb roads was 19.2 mpg for a 100 mile test. That was on my drive to work
which is 22 miles and 36 stoplights and 3 stop signs. Mind you, this is with the 3.73 gears too.
To get that, I had to be mindful of my acceleration on EVERY start from a stoplight to keep it
under 1500rpm. I snapped this picture on the 5th trip somewhere towards the end of it.
Now that I taught myself the hypermiling way to drive it, I balanced the aggressiveness
out of my foot to keep an average of 17.5 mpg with 100% suburb traffic driving.
Naturally every now and then I have to stomp the pedal for a giggle here or there.
BTW I don't do highway at all, so I have honestly no idea what I would get.
I hate the Chicago tolls.
Now with Winter Blend fuel in Chicago, my MPG's drop HORRENDOUSLY into the 12-14mpg
range for this same drive. So this engine either doesn't like winter blend or the cold, or both.
Anyone questioning this truck's engine from 2011, shouldn't have to anymore.
This is the Grand National GNX of the new millenium in a Pickup truck IMHO.
