Default Shop wouldn't put 285/70/r17 tires on

I am in the market for some taller tires. Went to the shop and picked out a set of 285/70/r17 tires and the guy looked on his computer and said he can't go any bigger than the stock 255/65 tires without a lift or at least a leveling kit. This was a tire shop, not the dealer. Is he just quoting chapter and verse of the OEM recommendations? How big can I actually go without a lift or leveling?

Go to a different mom and pop shop.

The member clubs (SAM'S, Costco and BJs) are like that as well.

True, they are left liable if something happens - alignment issues, tire wear...they are just being cautious.

Usually a shop would at least make you sign a waiver. I would go to a different shop as stated.

On a 4x4 at stock height a 285x70x17 should fit easily using the stock wheels...tires are only 32.7 inches tall. Remember that an all terrain design will fit easier then a mud tire will due to the lack of the large side lugs of the mud tires. That's a good size for a stock 4x4 truck with 17's.

It's not a 4x4, just a basic XL Supercrew. Will that make a difference? These 255/65/R17 tires look silly on this big truck. The 285s might be a little wide, but I like the 32" height.

If it's a 4x2 they may rub without leveling the truck. If possible test fit one on the front and see if they rub at stock height. All you may have to do is some trimming on the plastic...it will be close.

If all you want is the 32" height, search your local craigslist for jeep wrangler JK 17" take off tires.
they are 255/75/17 (32.05") goodyear wrangler SRA with a narrower (only 4 tread blocks) but "slightly" more aggressive tread pattern than the sra's that come on stock 4x4 F150's
wrangler owners are constantly upgrading tires and looking to get rid of their stock tires for relatively cheap prices. You can usually pick them up for a few hundred dollars including the wheels. keep the tires and then turn around and resell the wheels, or scrap them. you can usually get $10-15/ wheel scrap value depending on scrap price of aluminum at the time.

Look at a Firestone Destination in 275/70r17, Diameter of 32.2, tread width 8.4, load range C, I think it will fit.
