I think it's just a safety feature to keep the truck from rolling back or slipping out of gear and rolling. Just a guess.
Any transmission will clunk when shifting out of park on an incline if the parking brake is not used or not used correctly.

When parking on an incline you want to set the parking brake, shift to neutral, and release the service brake (normal brake) and let the vehicle settle onto the parking brakes. Then shift to park. When leaving, shift out of park, then release parking brake. There will be no clunk; I promise you.

It always irks me when people are on a boat ramp with several thousands pounds on a steep incline and you can hear the truck shift out of park from 1000ft away.
