Went and test drove a 4 x4 xlt supercab yesterday 5.0 3.55 gears Today I test drove a ecoboost with 3.31 gears power felt about the same. I think I`m going to go with a ecoboost with the 3.55 gears and limited slip axle, there actually tough to find in my area! I`ll definatly be moving up from the 2003 4.7 liter dakota that I now own! I don`t think pulling my bass boat up hills should be a problem anymore! I`ve gone to two dealers and now am sitting back to see who will give me the better money on my trade. Since yesterday I have already gotten another $1000 from the same dealer, he said that was the highest he could go yesterday...lol I`m using the x-plan so the price is already set on whichever truck I buy. We`ll see what tomorrow brings...lol

For towing or maybe plans to go with a little taller tire in the future I'd go with the 3.73 gear's. Sorry I didn't!

All the eco boosts I`ve seen so far around me have 3.31 gears...no thanks. If I have to order a truck it`ll have 3.73 gears for sure!

That's some of the best advice I've read in a while.

In almost 64 year's I've learned a little! Sometimes the hard way

I too recommend the 3.73 gears. Have owned two FX4s with them and couldn't have been happier when towing and with my bigger tires. Best of luck with whatever route you choose.

Why? The 3.55 can tow at least 9600 pounds and with a 3.55, 5th gear is about the final ratio of 3.73 in sixth or so.

My truck is a 5.0 and only has a 7700 towing rating, maybe lower with the 33" tires I put on. It need's the 3.73 to get moving with no load from 0-40mph. 1st through maybe 3rd or 4th. New 6 speed always seem's to be confused from 1st to 4th anyway, can't shift right! Maybe the EcoBoost is way superior for towing and accelerating empty. Brochure show's same truck as mine with Eco engine and 3.55 gear's at 9700 lbs. Same rating for 3.73's. 2k more then my engine but throw some taller and heavier tires on and hear it strain.

Paw Paw is right about the 3.73's and I whole heartedly agree. It really comes down to what you anticipate doing with your new truck but don't limit yourself. If your debating at all go with the 3.73's.

I have the 3.73 Elocker in my '11 5.0 4x4 SCREW and love it. Recently towed a dual axle car hauler and my old Land Cruiser (about 6,000 Lbs total) up 5,000 feet into the Sierras with no issues. Steep grades resulted in 3rd gear - 3500 RPM at 60 MPH with plenty of throttle left. And the Elocker is awsome in snow/ice/off-road conditions and much better than the Limited Slip in my 3 previous 4x4 SD's.

Good luck with your new truck and I hope your as happy with yours as I am with mine.

I would NOT settle for a truck without the 3.73's and I am VERY glad I didn't
