response from dealer:

It is perfectly normal for Steel parts to have surface rust. Under any truck you will find that. I welcome you in to take a look under any vehicle in stock car truck or suv. Any brand as well as we do have all brands on the lot. Anything that uses steel will have this. Surface rust is normal in these areas and does not impregnate or impede the structure of the parts used. Even google an outside source you will find this on Dodge, GM, Toyota, and so on.

That's normal. My 2011 looked the same the day I bought it, and I watched it come off the truck from Dearborn.

I also had a Toyota pickup ('91 SR5), and come to think of it I don't think it had rust like the Ford does, but I can't be certain. To me, it's the same as the rust that builds on brake rotors in a days time. My buddy's got a 5yr old Tacoma, I'll take a peek at the undercarriage and get back to you. You may be on to something but I still maintain its relatively harmless. The salt water on the other hand...

I had rust as well. Cleaned it off with a wire brush the best I could and sprayed it with Rustoleum paint. Still looks good. It is just surface rust though.
