Rough ride with new lifted strut! Help!!
#11
So I talked two friends that have the BFG KO AT2 tires. One guys has a f150 with the ranchos and the other drives a tundra with bilstein 6112 shocks. Both said that they noticed very little difference in ride quality from the stock tires and they are keeping pressures between 40-45

I have had them at 40 psi and now down to 36 psi to try to soften it up, not sure I can really go lower than that. Yeah same page. I think I want to go back to stock struts, 2" in spacer up front and some BFG ko2's and call it good Been reading what other guys are running and that seems to be a winning combo for most. Here is a question for you, I have aftermarket XD 18" wheels with more of an offset than the factory wheels. Do you think that is playing into the rough ride at all being that is does put more weight out further on the spindles than the factory wheels? Or do you think the rancho's and MT's are 100% the issue?

Thanks Eric for asking your buddies about those tires, really appreciate it! I think when I get some cash together that's the route I'm looking to go.
Drillrig52, thanks for your input also, I will work with the air pressure a bit but agree that once a stiff tire always a stiff tire!

The Ranchos I don't find stiff at all, I've never run them on the lowest setting.
I had Nitto Trail Grapplers, and then switched to Goodyear Duratracs. The Duratracs ride way smoother than the Trail grapplers

There are multiple aspects of the tire alone that are likely contributing to your issue. Assumption your running the Toyo Open Country MT 33x12.50 18 LT.
The stock tire, depending on wheel diameter, weighs right at 40 lbs. Toyo has the tire listed above at 75lbs. The added unsprung weight makes a huge difference in ride compliance.
The MT blocks aren't near as compliant on pavement compared to a AT or All-Season tire.
The extra plys are there to raise load capacity and improve handling for such loads. The extra plys don't improve ride compliance.

Rough ride with new lifted strut! Help!!
I've got the Ranchos and I went to 315/70/17 falken wild peak on my 09 lariat and I don't get a real rough ride and have them pumped to 50. Only problem I have is I think I have a tire out of round and get a slight vibration at 50mph but when I put rancho on they were a little stiff had to wear in some

Joe,
You are correct on the tire, thats what I'm running for a tire. I'm also running 18" XD Rockstar wheels so not sure what the weight is compared to a factory wheel but again good point with the weight difference.
Also I changed the setting to middle so 5 or a 6 on the rancho's and the ride actually dampens better so appreciate the advice there, I think my tires are the majority of the issue now.
Based on what you were saying Joe I might "Geek out" and figure up the stock rim and stock tire weight and when I go to replace them see if I need to look at different wheels as well or factory with the new tire combo to get back to as close to that as I can with a larger tire.

Joe,
You are spot on after digging here is what I found. My current setup is 22 Lbs per wheel heavier than stock! That's a ton of unsprung weight and with a super hard tire no wonder it rides terrible. The suspension can't keep up with that extra weight fast enough and the tires don't soak anything up. I laid out what I'm going to do to get within 8.2 Lb's of the stock setup, that should ride much better!
Stock wheels 42 Lbs
Stock Good year tire 275/65/18 40.5 Lbs
Stock Total 82.5 Lbs
Current setup
XD Wheels 32.5 Lbs
Toyo MT 33x12.50 72 Lbs
Current Total 104.5 Lbs
Future setup
XD Wheels 32.5 Lbs
BFG K02's 275/70/18 58.2 Lbs
Future setup total 90.7 lbs
