Rough Country Winch Plate and Winch

Not to dredge up an old thread, but I had the Rough Country setup on my truck for 12 months almost to the day. I used it exactly twice. This past weekend when doing my routine oil change/tire rotation I decided to unspool the winch cable and clean it since we've had a lot of salt this winter. Completely dead. I checked all the connections, fuses, etc and found no problem. I called Rough Country customer service and was told to "bang on the box a few times" to see if that fixed it. What? Is that a serious recommendation? I said thanks and hung up. I fiddled with it a while longer and finally came to the conclusion that this thing is gonna leave me stranded one day. I uninstalled it and I'm gonna replace it with a Warn. The mount plate is nice, but the winch is junk.
Cleaning the motor is really simple and they probably can sell you a rebuild kit if need be
With that said there is no price for confidence in a product. Warn winches are the standard for a reason. I'm sure you could sell the rcx winch to help pay for the winch.

I would bet it was the power wire. Mine works its way loose once in a while. I Used some bolt lock to secure the connections and boom. All is good. A winch is a winch. they all use the same interior parts, most are all made in the same china factory ..

Rough Country read of my experience with their winch and two different individuals have contacted me regarding my experience. I was contacted via email initially and asked for a phone number to speak to me personally. I replied and literally within 5 minutes my phone rang. They offered to replace the winch at no charge, provide another item from their catalog of a similar value at no charge, or refund the purchase price. I have to respect their effort to make it right. There's no changing the fact that the winch failed as described, but Rough Country's efforts to correct the problem deserve recognition as well. That was a great improvement over my first experience with their customer service so props to them. I appreciate their follow up.

Just seeing if I can get a few of you guys to reply, before I made a new post. I want to dress up the front of my truck, but I will not give up my tow hooks (because I was going to get a bull bar until I realized I had to delete my hooks.) I have pretty much decided to go with the RC Hidden Winch plate (2011 5.0 4x4.) I just got in my daystar 2 inch level, so I'll be putting that on soon. Add 33 Destination M/T's. Now my question. I want the chrome fairleads as shown on the rough country website, so I guess no synthetic cable for me. That being said, I want a 10,000 lb winch. I don't go in bad enough stuff to get stuck, but that winch would be super handy in the yard and if someone else got stuck. I want a Warn VR10000, but that's about 600 bucks for the setup. I'd pay that if it's made in USA like advertised, compared to cutting 200 bucks for a Chinese harbor freight or superwinch setup. What do yall think?

You can have chrome roller fair leads with synthetic rope. I bought a warn brand synthetic rope for a 4000lb warn winch and it came with rollers. It had warnings not to use a roller fair lead that has ever been used with wire. So you can use rollers with a synthetic rope if it's brand new.

As the original poster for this thread, let me try to provide some actual experience with the RC winch and plate.
For starters, the winch plate is a no brainer whether you're getting a Warn or other brand.
Second, it's nearly 2 years since I've installed the RC (Chinese) winch and plate and she still works (watch, tomorrow she'll die) and every few months I pull out the synthetic rope and check it out.
Third, regarding synthetic, I can tell it wears down over time, the manual warns about exposure to sunlight, whatever. It's lighter and easier to work with, and much safer. However, I think the steel rope would last longer.
You're not supposed to pull out trees with the winch; but ha! I admit I've done that with mine. Also, if you want to pull someone else out, hook up a rope to the rear of the truck and pull them out, don't use the winch, even though it looks cool!
Fourth, the wireless remote control from RC for their Chinese winch only works sometimes! This is a disappointment, but the wire for the hand control fits through the grill, barely long enough to work from the driver's seat if you need to drive and winch out simultaneously without a second person.
Last, Warn versus Chinese brand... most of the parts in these winches are made in China no matter the brand. I suspect the Warn brand might have better Chinese parts and better QC control, but likely the parts are the same. Worth an extra few hundred dollars? Not too sure about that these days... ask me when the economy really recovers!
Glad I got the plate and winch and glad I posted this thread if it helped others. Have a good weekend!

If you use the winch to pull someone else out only do so if you have a cable or capable strap to tie your truck off to a large anchor object. Leave your truck running and in neutral so you don't strain your drive train. The harbor freight winches in my opinion are the best bang for the money especially if you but their replacement warranty. I know several guys that have them and love them. Good luck with any route you choose.

Thanks guys I really appreciate it! I've noticed that the warn comes standard with the lifetime warranty. Who knows it may be a year before I can afford this little add on. But yalls advice will definitely help!
