Default Replacing air filters

Okay, I'm sure there are already some discussions on this but when I type in the Search function "Replace air filters" it gave me a hundred responses on everything BUT replacing air filters.

I realize several factors determine when an air filter is replaced but I was curious what the average was. I have a 13 Lariat which I just picked up in Dec. 2013. I have 20 thou on her now and I'm not sure if the dealer replaced it or not before I bought it when it had 9 thou plus on it. The GM drove it some after a customer traded it in and they serviced it and put it back on the lot just as I was pulling up.

Ford recommends 30,000 miles. I'll be changing mine then, some customers are just starting to show some dirt at that point, while others are pretty nasty looking. Just monitor it, and even turn it counter clockwise in the box 180 degrees to change the area where the most air travels through.

A visual inspection is also a good idea. How does it look?

I replace mine every other oil change, about 10K intervals. In the dust and dry weather we have here it is pretty grungy by that point. I do check it every time I change the oil though.

There was a thread on this forum about modifying the wheel well to prevent road grime from being sucked up into the airbox. That is on my list of mods for the future.

At 20,000 not bad. I live on a dusty gravel road but it's only 3/10ths of a mile in and out so very little of that. Everything else is open highway.

If you can hold it up and see light, then your fine.

Then I wouldn't worry too much about it. I am a bit OCD and will swap filters at a drop of a hat. It makes me feel good. YMMV.

I just changed mine in my '11 for the first time the other day at 25,000km. At $26, I think I'll do it yearly from now on. The truck ran so much better immediately after changing it and the old one didn't look all that grungy.
