now I have two pre-cut pieces of tape measure in the door pocket just in case the scenery distracts me!

i know of this scenery you speak of! Very pleasing on the eyes. I too admire it often while fueling the truck

So is there a way to replace it to a normal twist on/off cap or not?

I absolutely f**king hate mine. It's a complication with barely a reason to have been introduced other than the ole "ID-10-T" user error.

2017 F150 Lariat......first time with a vehicle that has this capless thing. Thought it was kind of a cool idea when I first saw it, but the little "easy-fill" flap touches the end of the fuel nozzle as its being removed and draws residual fuel down and out the end of the nozzle tube.
In the now 6000KM+ that I've had it, I haven't ONCE not spilled fuel down the side of my truck where it promptly seeps between the body panel and wheel-well trim. Now I'm not exactly sure how gasoline will eventually react to the aluminum down in there where I can't clean it out, but since gasoline is a solvent of sorts, I'm certain it won't be good........and I'm guessing WON'T be a valid warranty claim either.

What was wrong with just unscrewing a frickin' cap?!?

I'm not quite sure how it is complicated, but if you wait a few seconds before pulling the nozzle out after it clicks off you won't get any fuel spilling. (instructions in the manual)

This is my 3rd Ford with a capless fuel filler and I've never spilled any fuel.

I did too, to keep dirt out.
Moving the fuel filter into the tank, was stupid. Now it's major money to replace the fuel filter.
I hate not having a fuel cap.

I had no problem changing the fuel filter every 30k on my 1995 f150.
It was a much better truck in every way.

Yeah a buddy has a code for the filler on his Raptor.......I told him I wish I had my 1973 F250 tall boy back.....there was maybe 6 inches of hose between filler cap and tank....no problems there....Come to think about it my 1992 F150 had way more problems than the 73......darn why did I sell that truck.

Tried that........and shaking it.......and tapping it. Just like after cutting a copper plumbing pipe, you think the water's all out until a finger or emery cloth touches the edge and breaks the surface tension.
In the case of the fuel nozzle, it's the little valve lid on the capless cover. As it springs back closed it actually goes slightly into the fuel nozzle. This is enough to draw the residual fuel from the nozzle.

How does it come off? I would love to just put a regular cap on it.

(I don't need a locking cap where I live, but if i did I'd simply take classes on how to efficiently break hands and set up an alert camera).

Would be awesome to just get an answer to this rather than replies debating whether or not they are a problem, who likes or doesn't like them and why, or opinions on how complicated the setup it.

Bottom line is that my personal experience is as follows, it is shared by others, and that a regular refuelling tube with a twist on/off cap does not present the same issues.......

~ Fuel spillage
~ Can't pour gasline antifreeze in straight from it's bottle quick and simple
~ Not looking forward to ever needing to use a gerry-can in a jamb....if that's even possible with this design

I just want to change it to a regular removable gas cap. Can it be done? Can it be done yourself? If yes to either of those, what is needed to do it?

Thanks fellas

How are you spilling fuel?
Put the little funnel in and pour the antifreeze/fuel in. Easy.
