Default Recon LED 3rd Brake Light Issues

I recently ordered a smoked LED 3rd brake light from Recon. I always thought they were of good quality so I sought them out specifically when it came time to upgrade.

2 issues i ran into:

1st issue - i believe i have a dead unit. The light is wired up per the instructions, and nothing is firing up. No brake lights, no cargo lamp, no running lights. So, this the light is going to get returned regardless.

2nd issue - fitment is horrible. even after having tightly snugged the bolts down, i still have an air gap where the gasket meets the body, and is not compressing. I understand why their instructions say to use RTV (to fill the voids). Ohio is going to have a heck of a storm tonight, and I would have had walked out to a water soaked truck in the morning, without a doubt.

Is this common? Or did i get a lemon? Is there another brand I should get?

I installed the clear one about 3 months ago on my '11. I followed the instructions for the wiring portion and mine worked great, I just used some butt splices i had. I did have to redo one of them b/c i did not push the wire in all the way. As far as the gap, mine have a gap of approx 0.25" even with the gasket that came with it, i didnt wanna risk any water damage. So i ran a healthy bead of RTV 108 around it and so far so good!

Haven't had any issues with mine, had it on for probably over a year. Don't know if the quality has changed since then. Mine was nice and tight with no need for silicone. No condensation in there either. The directions were wrong, however, so I just followed ones I found by searching on here.

I put the black one on my truck, the colors on the sheet were different than what was actually on the unit. Fitment was fine for me

Had mine for 3 years, works and fits great, used black rtv for the gasket.

Considering the OEM 3rd brake lights have notoriously leaked over the years I always just recommend RTV on any 3rd brake light.

my fear with the RTV is it will damage the paint or rip up the LED light if i ever have to remove it in the future.

Is it possible to remove if RTV is applied?

Yes it's completely possible to remove the RTV. It won't damage the surface. However I have to caution you on how you remove it could potentially damage the surface.
