rear window defroster or exploding rear window
just heard back from wareham ford in wareham ma. they want to charge me $376 for the job. He said it will take about 4 hours to do ! 4 hours? I had the seat back off in 10 minutes , and im sure i could splice the wires in 5 minutes and reinstall the seat back in another 10 minutes maybe a half hour job and they want almost $400 bucks ? thats about $12.50 a minute , or $750 per hour.Nice work if ya can get it !
Just got off the phone with the insurance co. , and guess what ? She had a claim this morning from another 2010 f 150 owner with the same issue. He took his to the dealer and they sent him to the insurance co.. Ford obviously knows there is a problem with this MY and rear defroster , thats why they came out with the different windows to replce the old ones, but instead of stepping up to the plate and taking the hit, they are sending us to the insurance co. and letting them take the hit. This is what drives up our premiums , crap like this !!!!
Add me to the growing list it appears.... My rear defrost melted down and shattered the rear passenger side window with a bang this monring. Was around 22 degrees F. I had rear defroster going, had front defroster going too. My son tells me he hears something behind him and we both smell buring. I see what looks like steam or smoke and then "bang" the window shatters right behind his head.. scary as hell..
I'll try and post some photo's but it looks the same as those i've seen on the forums. Lower corner of the window is all melted and rubber seal is melted on the outside and dripping down the back of the cab. Factory tint is holding the glass together.
I've got an 2010 SCAB with over 70K miles (out of warranty). However I had several leaks from the cab mounted tail light. so much that they replaced the carpet and insulation. I called my dealer to ask if the old leaks caused this issue. They'd had a few of these come through. Then the dreaded question, "how many miles to you have on it"... So i'm out of warranty but they offered to contact Ford and see what could be done regardless. I'll post up a status once i hear back...

^^ I just spoke with the Dealer, they said FORD will do something, not sure how much they will cover since I'm out of warranty. I told the dealer they should cover it 100%, siting the significant number of occurances listed on forums and NTSB.. Should know tomorrow what they'll do...
The ford dealer i went to didnt cover anything , my insurance co. had to foot the bill, however the insurance co did say they were going after ford because of the number of claims they have received.
Yes the 2010 F150 with power sliding rear window with defrost will over heat and shatter. The electric defrost is on a 40 amp circuit. I believe the design has a problem that causes the passenger side rear glass to be isolated in the circuit resulting in it superheating and then shattering the glass.
The fix involves replacement of the entire window unit. The replacement part for just the glass for the original glass unit is not available. I had the entire unit replaced at a cost of over $1,100.
After some patience on my part I was finally able to convince Ford that they should replace the entire window unit under my extended warranty. I paid the $100 deductible.
My advice is to start at the top on any company that you are dissatisfied with your customer service experience. Be polite and stick to the facts. Rhetoric and threats will get you no where. In this case I went to Alan Mulally and he responded professional. He listened and had had my issue resolved.
I have a new respect for Ford Motor Company. It is a much better company since the last member of the Ford family step down from the top management job,

I am very happy today. I got my sliding rear window replaced today. It didn't shatter as others have because I never ran it due to that reason.
A few weeks ago I decided to turn on the rear defroster and check the surface temperature with my infrared thermometer (I don't know why I didn't think of this before) and the sliding part of the window was excessively hot! I took it to the dealer and they ran the rear defroster for even longer and the temperature was hotter than when I did it. I would say maybe dangerously hot.
The dealer said it was way too hot also. They were able to replace it under warranty with a new 2013 sliding rear window. I have to say, I was very happy with the way my dealer and Ford handled this.
Maybe as threegrapplers said in the previous post, that Ford may be taking this more seriously now.

I have a 2010 F-150 Platinum and just had the same thing happen. Smelled something burning looked back and saw smoke coming from the rear passengers side back window. Turned off the defroster then there was a loud bang and the window panel spidered . After seeing all the other people this happened to I wanted to post to warn other owners of this problem. The whole truck could have burned up.For what these trucks cost their should be a recall to prevent this from happening. I will take to my dealer to see what they will do. Wish me luck ...
