Default Same Issue in Alaska Yesterday

Sure enough, the rear passenger side panel of my 2011 FX4 is shattered. It's still in the frame so I took some pictures and am going to the dealer tomorrow for service anyway so I will show them then.

It was raining, the windows and mirrors were a bit foggy so I had turned the rear defroster on for a few minutes beforehand. Temp was about 12C.

The whole glass just looks shattered. You MIGHT say it's slightly spidered from where the heater wire contacts the glass. There is also oil leaking from that spot outside onto the cab body.

Did Ford take care of your window?

Default Same issue in Alaska on 9-12-2013

I have 2010 F150 with a heated rear window. The truck has 22,000 miles on it and I have had it more than the 3 year factory warranty. I purchased the PREMIUM CARE that extends the warranty an additional 4 years out to 75,000 miles. The warranty covers "Heated Back Glass )electrical only-not glass damage or breakage". Yesterday I turned on the defrost and within a few minutes the glass popped and spider cracked. The heating element malfunctioned super heating the glass causing the glass to break. There was no impact it is clearly the result of an electrical malfunction. Ford will not cover the $700 plus to replace the heated window. Does this sound right? I understand that impacts to the glass should be excluded. However an electrical malfunction should be covered.

A simple google of the problem reveals that numerous 2010 F150 owners have had the same malfunction. In some reported cases there were reports of smoke and fire occurring. Mr Gordon - Anchorage, AK

Mr. Gordon,

I see you're working with Meagan on Facebook. Please continue working with her to get this concern resolved. Thanks!

Ashley,

The saga continues. I moved the passenger seat forward to vacuum the rear floor of the truck. The seat will no longer move and when you use the seat adjustments switches all the dash lights come on like a Christmas tree. When the ignition is on the airbag lights is on and a single bar on the passenger seat heat is on (will not turn off). Took it to the dealer and they now have me in a rental (a Nissan Titan).

I am learning alot about the rear window defrost malfunction. It seems that Ford has redesigned the 40 amp circuit on the rear window replacements to try to keep this from occurring. This probably why just the window cannot be replaced. The owners that post here, on Facebook and file reports with NHTSA are only small fraction of the owners speaking out.

Thanks, Mike

Default Shattered Back Glass

My husband and I just purchased a 2010 Ford F150 Lariat Super Crew on 9/7/13. Yesterday morning when he left for work at 5 am he put on the rear defroster. He drove 2 1/2 miles to work and as soon as he shut off the truck, he heard a loud pop. The passenger side of the rear window shattered. I have been looking over the forums and it appears that this has been happening to quite a few vehicles and it is always the same window. We are going to see the dealer tonight. I am hoping that it will be covered under the warranty as the vehicle only has 32,000 miles on it. Luckily our daughter wasn't sitting in that seat because there are shards of glass over the seat and on the back tonneau cover as well. Any body have any luck getting Ford to cover the damage to the window. I really don't want to have to put this into my insurance company as it appears it is a Ford issue.

Please file a complaint so Ford will recall this potentially dangerous problem.

Hi TraceyLBlack,

Have you had your dealer take a look at this for you? They'll be able to diagnose your concern and give you an estimate to replace your window.

My truck was into the dealer today as the light was not coming on for the rear defroster. They have ordered me a new rear slider window for a faulty position sensor switch. Goes back in later this week. Glad this is covered by warranty.
