Been lurking, first post... I typically am successful with 12volt projects but definitely struck out today. Followed the disassemble instructions, found a wire that has power at all times, found a 12v wire that came on with the acc, found the wire that got power when I put the truck in reverse, disconnect that wire so I could run it to the switch. Figured I would test everything out before connecting it all.

I put the truck in reverse and to my surprise the camera on the rear view mirror turned on even with the wire that gets power in reverse disconnected...Power still would feed to that wire when I put it in reverse, but I didn't have it connected to anything, confused to say the least.

Any/all help would is appreciated.

Thanks,

Rob

I want to do this BUT I also want to add a front camera. is there a 3way switch of sorts? The front cam would be wonderful for the ultra small parking spaces I have to get my 6.5' box in

Double pole, double throw. Allows you to run to separate hot wires into two different negatives.

Single pole, double throw. Allows you to run one hot into two negatives.

Explain exactly what you want to happen when you flip the switch, either way, and I can explain the functions better, and how to wire it.

I just wired some lights on a DPDT switch, one way they only on with brights, other way they are on when the ignition is on(basically anytime the radio is on).

(pos1)front cam on
(nuetral pos)stock setting with rear cam on reverse
(pos2) rear cam on

This “mod” simply cuts PIN 2 from the mirror & places it on a SPDT switch. We then feed the factory wire that connected to PIN 2/Mirror & also connect to the switch.

Lastly, we splice/tap the 12V from PIN 1 over to the switch as well. Result is factory operation as designed in 1 position. The other position give me the “on demand” view.
Nice mod, nice write-up. On my to-do list!

I can think of several situations I'd like be able to turn on the rear camera while moving, but one of the biggest is when I'm towing a small moto trailer. You really can't see much other than the top of bike through the mirrors, this would be fantastic on longer trips to just take a quick look and make sure everything looks right...

Can you post a picture showing the switch after everything was buttoned back up?

You will need two automotive four pole relays. Autozone sells these. 30is 12v in 87 is 12v out. I am currently unable to draw a picture to upload right now.

You could get away with a spdt switch then, find a constant power supply when the truck is on, I recommend the radio delay fuse, that way when the radio goes off with the truck it does too.

You would wire this to the center pole of the switch. Run one negative to the 86 pole on your front camera relay, and the other negative to the 86 pole on you rear camera relay. The 85 pole will get grounded to the frame ) this completes that circuit to activate the relay).

You will have to find you existing reverse power wire for your back camera and hook it to the 86 pole for the rear relay as well ( this should not send 24v through the relay, but to make sure run both hot wires to a meter, make sure reverse lights are on and that the other wire is hot. The meter should read 12v still.) since you are using relays 3amp fuse will work on that one constant power wire and 14ga wire will work for this part.

Now you would run 12v wires to the 30 poles on each relay. I recommend 12ga (22 amp rating, but double check your amps the camera draws) run a 20amp fuse on these 2 wires( you always want your fuses to be the lowest rated components) from the 87 poles on the relays you will power each camera. Then ground each camera.

Now you would run the signal wire for your cameras to the screen. I do not know how the screens work with two images sent to them or if you want two screens.

Positions

Top = rear or front
Center = stock reverse on in reverse.
Bottom = opposite of top.

Hope it makes sense and I will try to get a picture made, but I cannot upload anything right now.

Default Anyone else done this mod yet?

Wondering if they ran into any unforeseen issues.

Also, what is the wire gauge?
