Rear main seal or oil pan gasket?
#11
Update?
So what did it end up being? I have the same thing going on. Noticed the leak, it’s slow. Just had the oil sending unit replaced. I took it in for an oil change and the mechanic (not Jiffy Lube) said it was the pan/gasket leaking. They recommended replacing the pan and gasket. I don’t know if I agree with replacing the pan, I feel like I should just have to replace the gasket. Anybody else have this issue and replace both? Not trying to cheap out the repair, but don’t want to waste money either.

I had the gasket replaced. I wouldn't think the pan would need replacement unless it had some obvious damage.

Cost of Repair
So how much did the rear main seal cost to replace? Or did you do it yourself, and if so how bad of a job was it?

Thanks
Thanks! I didn't think it was necessary. Felt like it would be overkill if it is just the gasket. The truck has 139,000 miles on it and the pan is not damaged. I will end up replacing the gasket when the weather gets warmer/ when due for another oil change.

Do you mind if I piggy back off your post? I've discovered an oil leak in the same area. I'm starting simple and getting a new plug, but that's more wishful thinking than anything. I also have a leak at what I believe is my VCT solenoid seal. If you don't mind, can I post some photos?

Life of a Rear Main Seal
I was told by Pep Boys that I have a leaking rear main seal, but I only have 127K miles on my 2013, 5.0L, 2WD King Ranch. How long should a RMS last...everyone I talk to says it shouldn't have failed this soon? Other mechanics say it could also be the oil pan leaking!? HELP!

So the dye just confirms it’s an oil leak and not a transmission leak correct? Any way to confirm that it’s the RMS and not the oil pan, without pulling the Trans?

Clean it real good, then watch carefully to see where it comes from. Dye could help with this, but probably not necessary. We figured mine out just by looking carefully at the mess.
