Default Rear head rest

Ok I know and have used the search. Is there a way to remove the rear head rests or fold them down or anything like that to see better out the back? I have a 2012 f150 FX4 super crew.

On my 13 FX4 there is a button on the side and they fold down. It is really nice seeing out the back.

Look real close, there is a release button that is flush on the plastic base where the head rest bars go in, I believe on the inside towards the center of the head rest. If you get them to release and tried to pull up, and not enough room to get them out, you need to fold the back of seat down.

It's easier to get them out by tilting the seat backs forward. If you look straight down on the door side of the headrest you'll see a latch. Easiest way to unlock it is by using a box end wrench unless you got strong fingers. Also makes cleaning the glass back there 100x easier.

Here's a thread with a pic of the latch:

Default Rear headrest removal

Here are some pics from my 2013 FX4.

As mentioned earlier, the 2013 headrests have a nice little button on the side that allows them to fold down out of the way...and makes them MUCH easier to remove.

On 2012s.....the release buttons on the base of the posts let the headrests come up.....but they run into the headliner before they come out easily.

Raise the the lower seat cushion...that drops the back of the seat down and forward a bit....just enough to wiggle out the headrests.

Good luck!

I see that's for a 2010. In the 2012 there are black cords (3 of them) that stick up from behind the back seat. Are these the release to get the seat down? I was pulling like crazy on these the other day but nothing happened.

No. Those black straps I believe are used to fasten child seats. Maybe someone with kids can chime in and confirm this. The circular rear seat release tabs are behind the seat itself somewhat near the headrest but almost a hand length down behind the seat. There is a really good thread on how to release the seat backs. If I can find it I will post the link for you

They'll come out. When you pull it all the way up, tug toward yourself slightly but keep pulling up. Work it that way and you'll get them out. I've pulled mine out before but they are a PIA to get back in!
