I used some graphite and a little grease on the cables.
The sliding window works great now. Maybe faster than the original.
I also turned the defrost on 3 times. So that's one more than the factory original.
All good at the moment.

Default Shattered back glass

So today im reading the forum on troubleshooting rear defrost and i go out to start truck to start troubleshooting and driver side pane shatters. What is the most inexpensive fix ? I dont care about defrost anymore just want glass fixed. Can one pane be replaced by glass company ?
Ps- of course im outside warranty by 2k miles.

No, you have to replace the whole window, Ford only sells it as one piece. Call you insurance company, it should be covered. Depending on your coverage you might have to pay your comprehensive deductible.

If you are brave enough, you can get the glass online and replace it yourself, runs about $400 plus tax and shipping.

Where are you located? When mine was replaced under warranty they gave me the old one. It's perfectly fine except for non functioning defroster. Not interested in shipping though.

Hi All,

Well, I have joined the club of broken rear defrosters. My 2010 FX-4 SC has only 38k miles...and living in SoCal, I've hardly ever used the rear defroster. But now that it's out, it has me thinking about another possibly related issue! My battery is draining to dead after two days of sitting in the driveway. I routinely carry a jumper battery to be sure I don't get stranded. I'm also out of warranty...by time instead of mileage. So all will have to be fixed on my dime and time.

I will probably just leave the defroster as is, since I don't use it much. But I'm wondering if the power drain problem I've been dealing with, for three batteries and about one year, might be related to this issue. Not using the rear defroster much, I never noticed it down until this past week. I'm going to start testing with my meter and see what happens.

Very disappointed with Ford and their methods of handling this kind of thing. It's not like their hurting for money...but their reputation is falling in my book, hearing how bad some of the dealerships are.

Take care,

JJ

Your battery is 7 years old. Might be time for a new one

EDIT: Oops, missed the three batteries in one year section.

I think you have an alternator issue or a different parasitic drain. Not sure the windows could be causing this.

Wow 3 batteries in a year. Were the batteries new? I'm no engineer but I don't think those 2 problems are related. You have a serious problem somewhere. Could be your alternator.

Cheer up.. My buddies 2015 Silverado is on its 15th recall. Big issues..like transmission and rear end problems.
If it were me and it was dead (which mine did under warranty luckily) but my mirrors still worked, I wouldn't bother. I'm in New England and I hardly ever need the rear defroster..

Masitile is right. Our problems could be worse. I'm coming close to 200,000km on my 2010 and no major issues. The biggest one is this rear window defroster. I live in Canada, lots of snow and cold in the winter, I don't really care or rely on my rear window defrost. Mirrors yes. Its too bad we cant find a quick fix for this problem and YES its disappointing that Ford let this re-occurring problem go on for many years. I'd just like to get my dash light to come on again but not at a $1,500+ price tag.
