Glad I found this before pulling the trigger on the lowering shackles. I have access to a lift so I will be removing mine to try it out. I will be towing a 34'11" camper in the future but nothing air bags can solve in the future. And if I keep them out before getting air bags I guess I will be ordering 2wd bags instead of 4wd drive due to the blocks being gone.

So, I know this is an old thread, but for those that may come across it and have questions to how long the bolts will be after removal I have attached picks of before and after.

anyone have any thoughts or advice on what shocks to use after the blocks have been removed?
Its time to get new shocks and I wonder now if I should be getting the 2wd ones since the distance is the same as the the factory 2wd

I myself will be getting the Bilstein 5100 for the 4wd. an inch won't make much of a difference. I also installed Firestone Ride Rite air bags yesterday so I am up a little than before.

You only got a 1 inch drop from removing the blocks? I'm trying to decide between that or installing shackles on my 2014 FX4, but I would like more than just 1 inch. Bummer.

1-1/4 inch is how big the block is. I was thinking of going the shackle route but using the Firestone RideRite bags would have been harder as the area between spring and frame would have been smaller. Airlift has a set that go from Axle to frame, but I saved 50 bucks by removing the block and went with Ride Rite. Without the block it has a slight rake to it which I have always liked a small rake. And now with my bags I can put anything in the back air up and I will always sit level or more.

I have taken out my blocks and was looking to upgrade my rear shocks. The 5100s are for stock or +1" lifts so i was worried they might be too long for a lowered F150
I got this response from Bilstien
"The only pat that might work is the stock 4600. But chances it will bottom out are good. We do not have anything shorter than the stock unit. We have provided a link to our fit by dimension catalog if you wanted to try that route. https://cart.bilsteinus.com/results?custom=Custom%20Light%20Truck&typeId=13169 2157456791104 "
I then looked at the model # for the 2 vs 4WD. For my model year thats 33-187471(2wd) and 33-187501(4wd). I asked same rep what the differences are, and his reply is that the extended and compressed length is 1/2" shorter for the 71. Everything else is essentially the same.
To me this means the 2wd model is the right shock for a 4WD without the lift blocks.

I removed my blocks and about a week later, installed 5100's for a 4WD. They were a little hard to compress to install the lower bolt but I just jacked up the frame a little, installed the lower bolts, lowered it back down and torqued to *****. I don't do any off reading with my truck other than our gravel driveway. They have not bottomed out yet and the ride is very nice.
Hope this helps!
