Is it an Ecoboost? If it is I am sure that is the problem.

Surface rust is exactly that surface. These parts are thick grade steel, its not like its gonna rust completly thru any of these parts to cause a leak or hole or something. I take to dealer i see 2 things happening, they either spray some paint/coating right over it (and returns few months later) or in there effort to try and fix it screw something else under my truck. No thanks, its not that big of a deal, if it doesnt effect the truck in any way (mechanically). Its merely cosmetic, not something we would expect from a new vehicle but i am sure Ford is aware of this rusting. Plus i looked at other trucks and they got it. I dont spend alot of time under my truck. Just oil changes.

I have the same issue 13 fx4 3000 miles whole rear end and pumpkin rusted my 2010 xlt with 65,000 miles didn't rust at all I say they have a problem im going to the dealer and ask them about it

I find it comical that just a few short years ago nobody cared about this and it was considered normal. Now people see surface rust and act like they've never had it and whine about it and demand a fix for it.

Canadians use oil on their undercarriages to prevent rust. I take it one step further and use grease. (2) tubs (~ 10lbs) of high-temp grease from Autozone =$12. I greased my entire undercarriage the summer of '11, and now it's '13 and I have zero rust... and that's with long winters with more salt on the road than actual road.

My experience with spray undercoating is that it falls off over time, requiring you to treat with a couple of cans every year.

How do you coat it with high temp grease? Brush?

No. I buy Vinyl or Nitrile gloves from Harbor Freight for when I need them for changing oil, or for projects like this. Just put the gloves on, put your hand in the tub of grease, and go to town.

Forgot to add. Your truck will smell like grease for about a week. So, if you normally park in a garage, you're going to want to park outside for at least a week for it to air out.

Is anybody going to own there truck long enough for this rust to actually haveany effect on the undercarriage of your truck? Whether it has rust now or 3,4,5 years from now, i dont think its gonna have any effect. Aluminum Exhaust pipes and cats have surface rust and it takes many years for them to even bury a hole in the pipes surely surface rust isnt gonna effect high grade steel. I am more concered if rust shows up on any hyrdraulic or brake lines more than rust on my gear box/axle

That's a good point. My guess is that for the majority of folks it won't matter. For myself, I keep vehicles a minimum of 8 years, and it helped sell my '01 silverado. The dealer commented on how great it looked for being in the salt belt.

I know you don't have rust, but it probably looks just add bad with a coating of dirt suck in grease. You are going to get messy as hell if your ever under there trying to work on anything, I'll take the surface rust.
