Default Rear axle surface rusting on a 2013 (build 1/24/13?) PIC

Had my 13 for almost a month now and noticed when I got it that there is a pretty good distribution of dark orange surface rust on the rear axle/pumpkin.

I'm going to see if I can't clean it off this weekend and see if it comes back (I bet it will). My '11 didn't have any of this even after almost 2 years. If it persists I guess I can always flat black paint it with a rust block on it if I want to.

Just wondering how common this type of surface rust is on painted axles of our new trucks? The axle is actually painted black.

Mine has the same on it. I just sprayed it with Duplicolor spray undercoating from Auto Zone.

Mine isn't quite that bad. Most of the rust is on the "Punkin"

Possible one of those parts that are designed very specifically to build a protective surface rust coating. You'll notice some suspension bits do the same thing.

Hmm. That's not right. Their painted and they have a protective coating to repel rust. I work at the axle plant and build the f150 rear axles. Idk how that one got shipped out. Cuz somebody would have had to notice the paint was kinda thin.

My 2013 looks exactly like this, rust on the axle and rear gear box and a few other spots. Is this really something that needs to be addressed or just a cosmetic thing.

I'd say cosmetic. But since the trucks new. Take it to the dealer and tell them to do somethin about it. Wouldn't hurt to try.

Ugh...wonder why that happens on some, and not others. My '10 is perfect under there.

If the dealer doesn't do anything, i suggest getting some POR 15. Stuff is amazing

I don't think my axle looks that bad but the driveshaft and several other parts were almost full coated in rust the day after I picked it my special ordered 2013 Lariat. Mine had 30 miles on it, had a peice of paper in the manual pouch that said it had been randomly picked for extra testing. I figured they drove it around on some salty roads up in Michigan and didn't spray it off. I know it doesn't hurt anything, but i would rather not have a brand new truck be delivered coated in rust!

I'd say your plant has really skimped on the coatings or has some inconsistent processes lately. I know it's cosmetic and will gradually form a solid layer of rust, but they didn't used to do that a couple years ago. Today I can see this on many of them still on dealer lots. That rusty axle stands out when you pull up behind a shiny new truck with temp tags, and see it streaked with rust already. It's a bad first impression for future buyers.
