Disagree - Towing weight has nothing to do with the GVRW. Still allowed to Tow over 9000 lbs.

When you are weighed, they weigh by axle. Front axle + rear axle = total weight. If you put a trailer that is heavy on the tongue it increases your rear axle weight which in turn increases total weight of the vehicle. If you register the truck for 6,000lbs which is essentially the weight of the truck, and say you add 900lbs of tongue weight (tongue weight increases rear axle weight) you will be over the legally registered weight of the vehicle. If you are in an accident and that is found you can be found partially liable. It's similar to the way if you hit a car (your at fault) and the driver of the other car is without a drivers license he will retain some of the liability due to his presence on the road was not legal and therefor could have prevented the accident by following the law.

My biggest question is if you bought a $40-50k truck, why are you trying to circumvent the law for less then a $100.

All that for less than $8 a month ?

I would be rather concerned about my finances,to start with, if buying a $45k truck would put me into a situation where I'm submitting false statements/documents to a Government Agency to save $8 a month.

Might be time to rebuy your old ricer sedan and buy a Dave Ramsey Book.

My dealer actually told me about this and gave me the option to register either way. I chose the higher GVRW just incase.

The time has come for me to renew my registration in the State of FL. I filled out all the online paperwork and when the time came to pay I noticed the amount was much more than I paid last year (Mazda Sedan). I did some research and it turns out that the State uses the GVRW (Gross Vehicle Rated Weight) The GVRW includes the net weight of the vehicle, plus the weight of passengers, fuel and CARGO. This puts the truck into the 7000-7999lb category. So I picked up the phone and called the best run department in the State, the DMV. After waiting on hold for 30 minutes a very nice, well spoken lady named Sheniqua picked up and offered to help me with anything I need. After being passed around the Department for a while I finally got an answer. It's as simple as coming into the DMV and requesting to change my GVRW. The lowest they can drop it is 5999lbs. This is good news and drops the truck 2 weight categories. Bottom line - Go to the DMV, no paperwork or documentation required and change you GVRW to 5999lbs. and save over 80$ a year.
