I'm doing it for use. I'm planning on getting into offroad exploring and want to be able to get unstuck. I've put a winch on the front, and I wanted real tow hooks on the back. I also have a metal block that inserts into the receiver and has a shackle on it, but I think the tow hooks are better for my needs.

so i finally got around to installing my factory hitch. when i bought the truck i never thought to look and see if it came with a hitch, i just thought it was standard equipment like seat belts. So i saw this and did mine too, i used the square u-bolts. I had a local spring place bend them out of grade 5, he said 1/2 they don't have grade 8. should be find grade 5 is what they use on the front anyways.. so with the hitch off i gave the bolts a coat of paint so they don't rust. here are the pics..

As a mechanical engineer I would recommend at least grade 8.8 in stainless or black oxidized. If you can find 10.9 grade that would be better. Try www.mcmaster.com

When I was mounting my tow hooks I couldn't find 1/2" diameter grade 8 square U-bolts anywhere on the web or locally so I had to go with grade 5.

I looked at the McMaster site and they didn't specify grades.

Look under "cap screws" and then on the left side of the page you can select anything from grade 5 to 10.9. Try this link. http://www.mcmaster.com/#standard-cap-screws/=n9f8hh

Oh, I see -- you're suggesting metal plates and cap screws like caperj used, instead of square U-bolts like gDMJoe and I used. Thank you for the link.

So I got a reinforced axle sling from Tractor Supply. These can attach to the hitch attachment point and that is a strong pull point.

Love the bumper sticker!!

I've been looking for a way to put tow hooks on the back, those loops on the stock hitch are a pain. I will be doing this soon, wish I saw this last year. And yes I'm brining this post back from the dead. Thanks for the idea guys!

Not a bad idea for recovering, I just want something that is always there. I have a set of D-ring shackles in the notches on the sides of the hitch but that wasn't intended to be tow hooks, they are for safety chains for a trailer. I just feel the tow hooks would be way more convenient for my needs.
