Default Stereo replacment with another Ford stereo

Hello there.
On my 2012 F150 my factory stereo went pop. So I got a stereo from a friend that has a 2011 F150, but he put in an aftermarket product and gave me his leftover. Although it is a different part number it dropped right in. It is just missing the Satellite radio feature, which I don't use.
It is working well, sync works, voice command works. Radio, blue tooth, and USB all work. The only thing that doesn't work is the volume and << >> buttons on the steering wheel. I tried another set of steering wheel buttons, but they have the same effect.

Does something have to be programmed in the BCM (Body Control Module), or am I SOL?

Thoughts?

Thanks, guys.

That would be the APIM (audio module) or the SCCM (Steering control module). Did you replace everything including your APIM? If so it probably needs to be coded for your truck.

I don't know the exact time line but ford did upgrade from sync to sync 2 sometime around 2012/2013.

Edit* do all of the steering wheel control buttons work besides those two for the radio? Did you mess up a pin somewhere? Did his vehicle have those buttons and did they work?
