Rain Sensing Wipers. What a PITA

Recently had a Ford Expedition in BC with the Rain Sensing Wipers and I also did not care for them. Speeding up and down based on the amount of rain that was hitting the windshield was annoying. For the week I had it, it rained everyday and was not able to find a "sweet spot" to leave the adjustment at.
My son had a 2002 Lincoln LS that had the same wiper system and it also failed to function after a few years. But, it does work normally when the sensor failed.

I've got them and love them. There have been a few occasions where they randomly came on for one swipe when there was no rain, but other than that, they are pretty much accurate. I've been in just about every mix of rain there is with them and never noticed them not keeping things clear and making whatever adjustments they need to along the way.

My last two vehicles had all the "plush" stuff - rain sensing wipers, dual zone climate control, power sunroof, cooled seats, ...
That plush stuff is great if a guy buys new and only holds the truck for a few years. Us "buy and hold" guys? Go simple and save ourselves lots of maintenance headaches later. XLT is as fancy as I want to go anymore.

My wife's 2013 Expedition has the rain sensing wipers, and she loves them. She loves anything that keeps her from having to think about it or do something manually. But you have to realize, she doesn't care how fast or slow the wipers go, or if they change speeds. She simply likes the fact that they turn on/off automatically, and she never has to worry about screwing around w/ the wipers anymore.
That said, I drove her truck in the rain the other day, and noticed that the wipers were on, off, fast, slow, etc. It was "cool" how they reacted to the rain amount/intensity ... but it was driving me crazy LOL. It was like a game ... "try to guess what the wipers are going to do next" ...
Me, on the other hand ... I love convenience/automated things as well, but wipers are one thing that will drive me crazy. I Rain-X my windshield, and try to avoid ever using wipers unless I need to. And, when I do use them, I like to set them how I want them, and don't want/need anyone else telling me how fast, slow, or often they should wipe.
Side Note: I hear people talking about auto-headlights and how they don't like those either ... well, I love those. I really couldn't care less if my lights are on/off when I don't WANT them to be ... they pretty typically turn on/off at the most appropriate times ... and on the off chance it's a really dark overcast day and I feel they should be on (but ambient/glare light is keeping them off) then I'll just manually turn them on ... no big deal at all.
