Been doing a fair bit of research on this... found a few threads and read something similar to what you said about the mounting holes.

But I would like to know if I can redrill another hole or holes in the step or chassis (rather drill the step) without compromising the structural integrity of the step. I want for functionallity, not looks.

I had a set for sale a few months ago for a 6 1/2 bed. The mounting brackets are different for an 8' bed. The steps are the same, the holes on the mounting bracket to the chassis are different. I found this out when I tried to fit them to an 8' bed. Sorry, but mine are gone, you will have to try the forum or ebay. My recommendation is not to drill the chassis, but find the correct ones. They mount easily.
