Default Question about 4WD and switching on/off

Took it into the dealer this morning.

The randomness is getting more frequent and I'm worried I'll break something.

When it happens, it sounds like metal to metal...not so much grinding but metal to metal. It's so loud in fact, when it happens, everyone near the truck pops their heads up to see where it's coming from.

It has now happened while turning or going straight.

Of course, it didn't happen on the 10 mile trip to the dealer this morning - figures.

BTW, I did look underneath the truck and saw nothing disconnected. Again, it's random so if a vacuum line was disconnected or loose, It'd happen all the time.

Dealer kept the truck over night.

In their defense, they did tell me their 4WD expert was on vacation until Wednesday but I didn't want to drive it anymore and take a chance damaging it.

I have to be patient.

Dealer just called. Truck is good to go.

Was a flakey solenoid for the 4WD vacuum. Repaired under warranty.

Picking up after work.

Woo Hoo!

Thank you for this thread. I keep going crazy thinking I can hear a faint vacuum leak when accelerating but can never hear it when at the dealership. Jacked up the truck and both front wheels are locked when running. Now I have something I can use to get the dealership to look into this before my warranty expires.

The solenoid is a common culprit. The video by fordtechmaculoco shows how to diagnose the system if you are out of warranty and don't want to pay a mechanic.
