Puddle light installation

I’ve seen quite a few puddle light install threads that say I’m gonna do it, I’ll post pictures after but never do, or I never got around to it. And there seems to be a whole lot of unanswered questions for guys that want to do this but get spotty information, including me. So I’ll show my install start to finish.

first off I have a 2014 xlt with auto dim, power mirror, and turn signals but no puddle lights. The knockout hole is there, and there are NO wires to just plug and play.

First off take the door panel off. 2 bolts here, and 2 more on bottom of door. When you pull panel you will also have to unplug the connectors on the back side and the door handle has tabs to pop out of the panel.

After you get the door panel off you want to remove your mirror, there are 3 bolts holding it and unplug the wire harness going to it. The top bolt has a flared metal thing (as seen in picture)so you will have to pull the mirror down from outside to pop it loose. Now you have you mirror and can get started on the wires.

Now here is where people get nervous including me, and that is popping the mirror off to get behind to remove the torx screws. Don’t be scared, it’s easy. Push the mirror down so you can access the tabs from the top.

I used a paint can opening tool since it has a hooked end. Pop the 4 tabs (2 on each side) loose. When you have those loose the bottom tabs will lift up without touching them and you can remove the mirror.

Now to install the wires. Some dude posted about using a string and a washer, this isn’t possible and the pictures show why. After you remove the mirror you can access the 4 torx screws, remove the screws and pull the housing apart (I popped the filler plug out for the puddle light and pulled there) you can push the wire through the hole and it comes out on the connector side.

I taped my new wire to the existing wire harness after pushing through.

Next I put connectors on the mirror side and plugged them into light and snapped it on place. Then I put the mirror back on truck and plugged in harness and pulled my new wire through. Then comes the splicing into the factory wiring part which I found was the hardest part on getting a straight answer on what wires to splice into. On the PASSENGER side the puddle lamp wire is the purple wire and ground is the black wire with yellow stripe. On the DRIVER side purple wire is still puddle lamp.... but black wire with purple stripe is ground. Here are my pics

Drivers side.. purple is light and black with purple stripe is ground

Now put your door panel back on and your done. Now I did use a test light to verify wires while lockonf and unlocking doors with my key fob to verify all my wiring. Also I chose to solder all my connections because I’m an anal sob. Hope this helps someone out.
