OK, I can't help but get in on this. Some really good advice has already been given.

Mud - if you have $10k worth of equity in your truck and really want to keep it long term, then refinance your current truck loan. I refinanced earlier this year and actually raised my payment so I could pay off my truck 6 months earlier, my interest rate went from 4% - 1.49%. Interest rates are low now. Use that $10k to pay off CC debt, and buy yourself a tonneau cover that actually works. I have both my kids (in car seats) and 105 lb. black lab travel comfortably in the back seat of my CC when we vacation. The clothes and other stuff fill up the bed, 6.5 feet makes for one huge ***** trunk, LOL.

Now - if you are tired of your truck and want something different for whatever reason, then all this is moot.

For what it's worth - - back in '08 I traded in my pickup for an Explorer, and I couldn't believe how much I missed having a pickup. So much so that when it was paid off I traded it in for an F150.

I can't imagine not having the utility of a pickup ever again. Maybe when I'm too old to hoist myself up into the cab!

I have to agree it seems you WANT more than NEED a different vehicle.

I agree with you debit is an issue and a REAL Pro's and Con's list will take that into effect.

Reality is a large SUV is not going to be much better MPG wise to save much if anything.

Nothing was said about your truck not being safe or road worthy. The guys here have nailed it saying the Camper Shell is the way to go. Lowest cost option to meet all your actual NEEDS and best fit when figuring in your Financial Situation as well.

With an all encompassing Pro's and Con's list sounds like the camper shell is the way to go. From what I am hearing it sounds much more like a matter of want than need or practical.

With that said I can understand as when I was young and newly married my wife and I had to make due with one car until we got our finances straight, then after a divorce I just had a motorcycle for a year (in the rain and all) until I was ready to get a P.O.S. used beat up car, wasn't what I wanted, was even a bit embarrassed but it worked. Now things are much better and I can again afford new cars, boats, etc. Give yourself some time and get the debit monkey off your back and everything will start looking and seeming much better.

In other words just get the Camper Shell

Rant Off

I read this whole thread and laughed a lot. Sounds to me like spending $20 in rubbermaid totes will solve all your problems. Yukon isn't going to get any better mileage and will probably get worse. Definitely pay off those cards, they just suck tons of money out of you in interest. Probably could've bought 3 caps for what your paying in interest on maxed out credit cards!

I have a similar "family" situation and the combo of a BakFlip and 2 XL Kennels (with covers in the winter) for my two labs in the bed solve the issue. Under $1K and works perfectly for me.

Sell the truck privately.

Buy an older vehicle.

You complain about money and can't afford this or that and have cards maxed out blah blah blah yet you bought a 40thousand dollar + TRUCK. Seems like you should have thought of that then.

Get a better soft tonnue. I have a low pro and have no water issues at all. I throw luggage, wood, funiture etc back there and NEVER have issues. Only issue is dust from gravel roads.

A Yukon WONT get better mpg. It will get worse.

Maybe slow down to 65mph. You will get better mileage. WAY better mileage. I get over 20 with my 5.0 at 65mph.

It may be tough love but it sounds like you're over your head and looking at shiny objects instead of trying to fix whats wrong now.
