Program a backup camera?
Hi,
I have a 2010 F150 Lariat which I bought with the Sony nav system plus backup camera. Recently, the backup camera started working only intermittently: sometimes it works perfectly, other times it has a flickery gray image (that's actually left-right inverted). Assuming I can't find a connection problem, I thought I'd replace the camera myself (to try to save about $300.00), but the rep at the dealer service center is telling me that although I could swap out the camera myself, they will still need to hook up a laptop to my system and reprogram it. He tells me that until the new camera is reprogrammed, it won't work at all. That sounds bizarre. Is he right? Will the new camera really just display a blank image until they "program" it?
Thanks much,
Matt

Get this one with a complete housing/emblem assembly. It will be a much nicer image than the factory one and the new housing will not fade like the old ones:

Also comes with a 3 year warranty. You will not have to program anything... just plug it in.

So after trying to clean the connections in a couple of places, I became even more convinced the problem was with the camera itself. At tiknu's suggestion I bought the BL3Z-19G490-B camera from Tasca parts. After shipping it was around $112.00. Took me about 5 minutes to install. So far so good. If the problem returns I'll post again. Here's a couple of things that might be useful to other people with the same problem.
1) Remember how the old camera is oriented in the bracket before you remove it -- it's not keyed, so you may end up with a rotated picture if you forget how it went.
2) Tasca Parts advertises the BL3Z-19G490-B as compatible with the 2011 F150, but doesn't say anything about my 2010. The description said it was a replacement for the AL3Z-19G490-A, but my part number was AL3T-19G490-AA. So I called Tasca, and the sales rep said the 490-B was indeed the right part for my 2010. So apparently that camera covers more years and replaces more part numbers than listed.
3) Once I plugged the new camera in, it came right up. The backup guidelines were overlayed on the image (and it even added a new black-dashed-center line). I DID NOT HAVE TO TAKE THE NEW CAMERA INTO THE DEALER TO GET PROGRAMMED. It's so far working perfectly and all I did was plug it in. SOOooo, kidastra had it right when he told me no programming would be necessary since I was merely replacing an existing camera. But unless I'm missing something, the other posts above suggesting the backuplines wouldn't work without first "configuring" the new camera appear to be in err. Or were you all trying to tell me that the backup lines would just not be aligned with the true edge of my truck? (Actually, they do appear to layout an edge that's perhaps a few inches wider than my tires -- but that seems just fine to me). Perhaps the new cameras come pre-configured??? I dunno.
Mind you I'm not complaining. I just wanted to report my experience to anyone else who might find this post.
4) Someone suggested I also buy a new emblem. The clips did indeed break when I popped it off. (Why do they design stuff like that?) But my plan is to go to Home Depot and buy a tube of silicone sealant, smear a tiny amount on the lip of the old emblem and stick the old one back on. Not only will it save a few bucks, but should help keep water out of the housing, which might keep the new camera happier.
I appreciate the time all of you took to help me out. I think you all saved me three or four hundred dollars. A month's worth of pizza for my whole family!

I assume the guidelines are the 2 lines that are green, yellow and red? I just replaced mine on my 2012 F150. The Ford dealer wanted close to $1000. The camera alone cost $500, plus housing, emblem and labor for another $500. I paid a total of $250 by doing it myself. Saved $750. It works and if the guidelines that I described above is what Mr. Spazmonkey05 and Mr. RLXXI is talking about, it does show up.
