Costco sells lug nuts in the tire department for about 50 cents to $1 per lug nut and they have a lifetime warranty against the chrome being scratched. Had them on my old ranger and if one got scratched just return it and they exchanged it for free.

The issue (chrome capped lug nuts) is NOT unique to FoMoCo, all/most manufacturers use the same concept. REASON: $$$$$

Only solution is solid, aftermarket lug nuts in a finish of your choice.

Another site recommended McGard. They are expensive, but might bite the bullet in the new year. Though Costco is an interesting idea too. Might check that out.
