In my case I couldn't stand the brown or grey Platinum interiors, the lack of an 18" wheel or the painted bumpers that would chip and so I pimped out a Lariat which was about the same price as a pimped out Platinum except I don't have power adjustable steering in the Lariat.
Exactly. I wanted a fully loaded truck but the Platinum leather colors were weird, the giant platinum tailgate decal or whatever that big thing is looked odd and I liked the chrome bumpers, grille and running boards on the chrome package equipped lariat. So went with a fully loaded Lariat.

Now are those like the the ones on the Platinum? Also, the lariat has the off-road package option, the Platinum doesn't...so comparably equipped is a very realtive and tenuous phrase. They have simplified some of that for 2012 but there are still differences. HENCE them being two different models/trims.

The OP asked a simple question that has become very blurred...

Simply wants to know what you get extra to justify the extra money. When I purchased in August Ford offered a $2k rebate on Lariats and a $1k on Platinums so there is an extra $1k right there. I also didn't get the "Lariat discount" on the moonroof and Nav so there's extra money. I got quotes from three dealers on what I considered comparably equipped Lariat vs Platinum and all were $4k-$5k more for the Platinum. I DONT GIVE A CRAP WHAT ANY OTHER MEMBER SAYS, insert the relative part here about comparably equipped, that was my personal first hand experience.

I chose the Platinum for the reasons already mentioned here...body colored bumpers, satin grille finish, 20" alluminum polished wheels, the Platinum tailgate, heated back seats, power running boards, memory everything(seats, steering, mirrors etc.) including power adjustable steering, rain sensing wipers, extra sound dampening, black trim with brushed metal looks super nice, ambient lighting(which is actually useful) and the biggest reason was because my test drive of a 2010 Platinum blew me away after driving two 2011 Lariats. Plus trade-in will be better on a Platinum.

The one and only thing I feel I had to sacrafice or compromise on was the off-road package. I won't have the e-locker or the shocks but I do plan on getting the skid plates. There goes that relative part of being comparably equipped again!

Anyhow...I can't put it any more simply than that!
Elocker is a virtually worthless feature that 98 percent of f150 owners will never use except maybe once to see if it works. Its not available on lariats either, only fx4 and pre 2011 its actually a detriment because it sticks you with an open diff when you aren't using it, which sucks. At least they fixed that problem in 11 with the electronic wheel slip that essentially makes the open diff behave like limited slip.

I agree with your statements that platinum is a higher trim than lariat, of that there is no doubt, but to say its so much more expensive is about as dumb as arguing about floormats you have never even seen. There are many factors affecting price but who really cares this much? They were 2-3k higher than the fully loaded lariat I bought at my dealer. I didn't like them at first but like them the more I see them, my next one might be a platinum, however I like chrome bumpers too. Can't have everything you want!

My lariat has the e-locker and off-road package. Now, let's hear from all the Platty owners with the off-road package.

Brilliant! That is like saying let's hear from all the Lariat owners with rain sensing wipers. You can't order them that way. Who cares? You buy what you like and I'll buy what I like. It is not about which is better. After reading throught these posts all I want to do is take my non off road packaged truck and drive it off a bridge. (I am pretty sure the off road package would not save me...)

Chill brother, the op wanted to know the difference between the two models, besides you forgot to mention the electric steps that can't be ordered on the lariat either.

Both options are available aftermarket if you really want them.

Can't we all just get along. It was stated well already and still stands. They are both Fords and with Fords come quality, value and practicality. Lets all get out and enjoy our trucks.
