Default pinion seal leaking

2013 f150 4x4 rear pinion seal leaking with 13000 miles on it. Anyone have any insight on this early failure or anything to look at other than throwing a new seal at it?

It's under warranty...take it in to your dealer & they will replace it.
No insight on the early failure... Does not happen that often.
I had a super duty with a V10 a few years ago & also had a minimal leak. They replaced the Seal & even put a new crush collar (internal part for proper bearing preload), and was fine for over 200,000 + miles.
They'll fix ya up & no worries.

I've had four f150s and all had this. Some sooner than others. Simple fix. No worries, just a design issue.

Mine started leaking around 12000 miles. Spent about an hour at the dealership and it's been fine ever since. Just turned 35,000 miles with no problems. The service writer said it wasn't a common occurrence.

My 13 started leaking at 5000 miles. Dealer replaced the pinion seal and cleaned the differential but I had to clean the oil off the bottom of the bed. I'm just over 10K now and so far, so good.

I hope this failure is covered under the power-train warranty if it happens again after I've had the truck for more than 3 years.

I have a quick tip for all on the seal. I put some rtv around the seal when I install them. The second thing is to make sure that there is no oil in the way when you go to put the new one in. These are just some tips that I have learned over the years.

I had the same thing on my 2012 XLT but I have 295 70 18trails on during the summer and regular snow tires in the winter. Should of brought it to Ford but didn't try on warranty. Do you have a level or bigger tires?

Truck is bone stock mechanically just cosmetic upgrades.
I would recommend everone take a look under your truck no matter how low your miles are. Never was concerned since I have had the dealer change my oil every 5000 miles and rotated my tires and would think they would have spotted the leak. It has been leaking for a while since I had to put almost a quart of fluid in it.

Are you going to have your dealership check this out, stumppuller? Keep us posted; I'll hang around this thread just in case you need my help.

I just had mine replaced (under warranty) on my '13 with just over 35,000 miles on it. Not sure on the cause of failure....
