Default Eaton TrueTrac

Okay, so I was mentioning to my roommate I was going to be saving for a Detroit Locker, when he mentioned that he had a brand new Eaton TrueTrac in his room. He has a 2008 Mustang GT that he planned to install it in, but ended up buying a BMW M3. Long story short, all he did was open the box the TrueTrac came in. Being a very good friend, he has offered to sell it to me for only $250, which is less that half what I would pay for one brand new.

Anyway, that out of the way, my truck has an open diff. This has been my only regret with my truck, and it was something I didn't realize until after I bought the truck (long story, mistake on my part for taking the word of the dealership). Anyway, my truck is a 2010 FX2 with the 4.6L 3V. From my understanding, my truck should have the same rear-end as my buddies Mustang GT; 8.8", 31-Spline. I have not been able to find any specific details about my rear-end, and really know little about rear-ends in general (no pun intended, lol). I guess the question is, will this TrueTrac work for my truck?

First, I think the trutrac is the way to go. I love mine. I don't think you'll like the locker locking up and spinning out around turns and having horrendous traction in the rain on the road... especially if this is your daily driver. The trutrac is a very solid limited slip. unless one tire is completely off the ground, it'll turn the other wheel. Second, I am 99% sure his trutrac won't fit. Sorry. Call the guys at randys ring and pinion (ringpinion.com) and they'll give you the scoop. Got my gears from them over the summer and was real happy with how smooth they made it. And I didn't know anything...

when you call, you'll need the details off of the sticker on your rear axle... you'll see what I mean when you get under there.

Truck is in the shop right now, so I can't get under there and look to be certain. However, if I recall correctly, it only has 10 bolts, as opposed to 12. This would mean it's the 8.8" rear-end. Also, according to Ford, if it's an 8.8" rear-end in a 2010, it's 31-spline. This is what my research has turned up. Also, as far as I know, Eaton's TrueTrac is universal as long as it's the same rear-end size and spline count, no?

Also, I don't know if it matters in determining anything, but my ratio is 3.55 Non-Limited Slip.

Talked with my step-dad this morning, and he is going by the shop today. Asked him to get underneath the truck, and see if he can count the bolts on my rear-end for me. Hopefully this will better help answer my question.

Just spoke with my step-dad, he crawled under the truck and said there was only 10 bolts on the housing. From everything I've read and seen, this means the rear-end is an 8.8". Can anyone confirm? If I get the chance, I'm going to try and go by the shop and grab a pic of the vehicle tag on the driver's door.

No. There is also a 9.75" rear with 10 bolts. The pic you need is of the tag on the rear axle. My truck... 2010 XL screw 4.6 3v 4x2 was geared 3.55ls. I purchased the overhaul kit YK-F9.75-C and the Yukon 4.11 gears as well as truetrac A477 Ford 9.75 sorry bud. It prolly ain't the right one. Call Randy's Ring and Pinion. They know EVERYTHING and will give you sage advice w/o pressure. I promise.

Okay, I took your advice and called Randy's Ring and Pinion while I was on my lunch break. I gave the guy all the information I had, and told him I didn't have the Axle Code/ID off the tag on the rear-end. He told me he didn't need it with the info I gave him.

According to them, if it's 10 bolts, it can only be an 8.8", 31-Spline. I mentioned what you said about a 10 bolt 9.75" rear-end, and according to them, they have never heard of one like that. They said all the 9.75" rear-ends they've dealt with are 12-bolt. I also told him about my roommates truetrac, and he said it should work without issue, as long as it is 31-spline (which it is), because some of the Mustangs have 28-spline rear-ends.

BTW, Randy's Ring and Pinion were very nice, and was ready to offer all the help they could. He even went into detail about some of the older rear-ends Ford used to use. All-in-all, a very pleasant and professional conversation.
