Question Painting 2013 emblems and ovals.....have plan and many questions

Hi,

I want to paint the chrome on the F150 emblems black and paint the insides blue. I also want to paint the ovals black and paint the Ford blue. The 2013 ovals have a space between the details, unlike previous ovals that had raised lettering. This should make taping and cutting much easier.

My oval questions are:
1. How do I remove them? I have a back camera.
2. Are these plastic?
3. what paint should I use? I was thinking Krylon Fusion?
4. How many coats, sanding, polish, etc...
5. Do I also need a clear coat?

My F150 emblem questions are the same as above, and:
1. Do the inserts come out?

Any input is greatly appreciated.

I known overlays are on option but I want to get rid of the chrome, so decided to try doing this. And if I fail, I will slap an overlay on it to cover up my blunder.

Thanks in advance.

It might be a little tedious, but I think it should work. I am going to use rc car masking tape and an x-acto knife. Here is a section I just tried.

The front emblem is actually a multi-piece emblem. They are heat welded on the back side, but can be easily seperated using a drill bit similar to drilling out a spot weld. The rear is a bit more tricky as the oval is just one piece with the Ford script being slightly raised. The oval pope off of the camera bezel fairly easily, but you will break the tabs in doing so; there's no way around it. The bezel then comes off by removing (2) 7 or 8 mm bolts and unplugging the camera. As for what you want to use, I'd advise at least buying some automotive paint versus using the Krylon fusion.

I seen a you tube video of a dude that popped them apart into layers... it was in Arabic so didn't get the details. Looked like it was easy they just paint the separate layers.. maybe this was an older version of the oval too...

look at the pic on the first post...

Are the tabs on the emblem or bezel?

Wasn't sure how well automotive paint would stick if it is plastic.

Why wouldn't you just get some emblem overlay decals for $20. At least you can peel the decal off someday if you get sick of it.

Painting looks fantastic... just a PITA though.

Was at the auto parts store and was looking at their paints.

I am now thinking of using an adhesion promoter, color, and a clear coat. They only had Duplicolor. Would that be better than the Krylon?

I really need to start a side business painting these things, haha!

Anyway...anything is better than duplicolor as far as auto paint goes. But it will work. If you have no other option. If you have an O'reilly's near you, check them out. The 2 near me actually carry some pretty good paint for at home use, like omni, which is a low grade version of PPG. And Nason, which is a low grade DuPont. Both are really good for their price. You will need adhesion promoter, a sealer, then color and clear.

Another good choice is SEM in aerosol which would be more than adequate and I'm with mbullock about using all of those steps to insure your paint adheres correctly.

Sealer? Is a fine grit sanding needed?
