I received this error code. It says 02 sensor circuit (bank 2 sensor 1) - not current dtc

I took it to my mechanic and he ran his machine and came up with the above code. He said that the 02 sensor on the driver side exhaust manifold would need to be replaced. We cycled the engine about three times and the CEL went off. I've found information online that leaves me to believe that this could also be related to needing an ECU update, but that normally shows another fault as well. My mechanic can't do any computer updates, and ford wants $100 to "troubleshoot" and $120 to update if needed. My mechanic recommends just waiting to see if the CEL comes back at any point. He said the Ford OEM part is about $120 or so and the labor is $60.

So, long story short. Is this something I should replace now, or should I wait to see if CEL comes back?
Is this something I could replace on my own or is it worth paying the $60 to let him deal with it?
Is it worth taking to Ford to scan for update, or would you not do that unless replacing sensor doesn't fix issue?

I appreciate any help on this.

BTW. it's on a 2010 5.4 with about 105k miles. I've owned since new, so I know what has and hasn't been replaced if you have any questions.

If there is a later calibration that would be the best thing to do before you start throwing parts at it. Working as a dealer line tech for over 11 years I have seen these types of concerns fixed with only an update.

$23 wasted if it don't fix the concern. Throwing parts at a vehicle in hopes of repairing it is the shade tree tech way and rarely accurate.

The code does NOT state the sensor is bad, only that there is a concern on that circuit, here is a list of possible problems.

P0150 - O2 Circuit (Bank 2, Sensor 1)

Description: This DTC sets when the PCM detects a concern with one of the circuits used to determine the oxygen content in the exhaust gas.

Possible Causes:

• UO2S circuit open
• UO2SGREF circuit open
• UO2S circuit short to voltage or ground
• UO2SGREF circuit short to voltage or ground
• UO2SPC circuit short to voltage or ground
• UO2SPCT circuit short to voltage or ground
• Incorrect connections
• Damaged or corroded terminals
• Exhaust temperature significantly higher than expected
• Damaged universal HO2S

As I said before, throwing parts at it blindly is just plain foolish. It's also possible that a calibration update could correct code that was written incorrectly causing the system to report a problem incorrectly.

This is not a game, I'm only stating fact and one of the very 1st things Ford taught us with drivability concerns is to verify the pcm calibration is on the latest level. Don't tell me you've never updated your pc, same thing go's with the computer in our trucks. Why this boggles your mind is beyond explanation, you are a tech right?

P.S. I always did the pcm updating for free for my customers, the op here should look for a different dealer, small town dealers are usually the best.
