Own a 2012, rented a 2017 and loved it!
Like the title says, I test drove a 2017 and the ride was very smooth compared to mine.
Now, the rental was an xlt with 4x4, which is all I really need. The interior was very nice and functional. It had the 10spd tranny and was the 5.5 ft bed. And... I still stand by my opinion that the cloth interior is more comfy than the leather.
Mine is a 2012 Platinum, ECO boost, 6.5 bed, 4x4 with max tow package. Nice truck for sure. But the 10 speed tranny certainly removed all gaps and had more immediate pickup.
I have less than 80K and its in perfect condition in and out. and I like my truck.
How can I get mine to ride more like that 2017. New shocks is a must. My ride is harsh and I tow 4-5K about once a month for about 300 miles round trip.
Can I get a tune and it help?
What is the real difference...

5yrs difference in technologies used in construction is a pretty large gap. If you want the 12 to ride like a 17, trade it for one.

Was the 17 a max tow package truck? If it wasn't, I'm sure thats a big change in suspension/ tires between the two, and that will be a big ride difference.
But I agree that the new 10spd tranny is great ! Wish I had that and the gen 2 eco boost in mine

What's the 2nd gen eco boost all about? More power down low?
That gap in technology doesn't cover the gap that would be left in my wallet if I traded my 12 for the 17. A better balance would be to do maybe a suspension upgrade to get mine to run a little smoother.

Put 199k on my 2011 purchased in April of 2012. Loved the ecoboost. Early on and still under warranty did the intercooler and left side cat. Put a battery in at the 4 yr mark. Changed oil every 10 k and put brakes all around at 197k. Oil never got over 1/4 down in the stick at 10k....after 190k.
Bought a 2017 last week. I told salesman I loved the old one....he said you'll love this one even more. He was right. Shifting is seamless. Never hunting gears. SPORT MODE WILL LAY YOU BACK IN THE SEAT and reminds me of the 6 speed shift somewhat. Firm 1-2 shift you would expect it to break loose...almost 2-3 too. Oh.... gen 2 torque really shows at hwy speeds too

There is no wrong answer but if your wallet is a consideration. Perhaps you might be happy with what you have. Some find it easier to absorb upgrade cost in financing new.
There is no magic wand you can wave that will make your truck perform like a truck that is 5 years newer no matter how much you wish it. At least not at great cost.

Bilsteins or some well tuned coil overs should improve your ride nicely. I really like the new trucks but I'm going to wait a few more years before jumping into one.
