Oil pressure gauge, not real !

I am not sure when it happened, but Ford cheaped out on the oil pressure gauge. Well technically, it is not the gauge itself, it is the sending unit. It is merely an ON/OFF like used for an idiot light. The gauge always reads in the middle.

Possibly there was an "upgrade" to a real pressure sending unit, but it wuld requiring changing the firmware in the cluster to interpret that data and display it correctly. Now it reads in the middle of the gauge except when there is NO (very low) oil pressure.

Has anyone installed an aftermarket mechanical gauge ? What brand and how difficult was it.

Hate to tell ya, Ford has always had "idiot light" style oil pressure "gauges". Many people have put aftermarket oil press/water temp gauges in cars/pickups over the years not trusting the oem gauge. Googles gonna get ya info until ya mention what engine ya got!

Not always ... way back-in-the-day they were real and registered actual (though not entirely accurate) oil pressure.

I put an electrical gauge in mine. Works great....75 psi cold.

In the mid 80s, for started using the "dummy" sensors. On the OBS Fords, it's common for people to swap in the old style sending unit and bypass the resistor on the back of the gauge cluster so the gauge actually moves with the pressure. I did it to my 89.

My 1989 Probe had a real gauge, I was disappointed to find that my 1999 Mustang had a dummy gauge, and not surprised to find the my 2014 F150 had a dummy gauge too.

Our 16 F250 has a gauge that actually moves. I think Ford doesn' expect these trucks to actually be working

My 99 mustang gt had a dummy gauge until i found a guy that sold a module to make it functional and it's a sweet mod. He was supposed to be working on one for newer vehicles, but i don't think he has had any luck yet.

Could use one of those for a 94 Mustang!
