OEm Navigation installed
Yesterday I upgraded my FX4 from the standard 6-disc radio to a navigation unit. I did the same to my 12 XLT I used to own so I was somewhat familiar with the procedure. This time I opted to buy a complete kit from a company called 4Dtech instead of buying individual pieces and deal with the programing.
Buying a complete kit may cost a little more but it is worth it because this time the radio button illumination is bluish instead of green and you get support for the entire kit. Speaking of customer support......I called 4Dtech on two occasions and got answers quickly without being on hold for a long time; doesn't get much better then that!
My truck has the Sony Sound so I kept my amp. The installation was a bit involved because I had to remove the entire center console to get to the amp connectors to splice two wires (needed to hear nav prompts). You have to splice on the gray connector (red arrow). I also ran the additional video cable and now I have the back up camera display on both, the nav screen and the rear view mirror. The biggest PIA was to insert two pins into one of the radio connector plugs; I know there are special tools to insert them but I didn't have it so I used a small pick.
Some prefer aftermarket units and I been down that road (Kenwood 890HD) but I just like the OEM integration and looks.
