Not bad for a plain Jane XLT

I haven't done any long distance highway driving yet but around town and short trips the 20's are costing me about 2 to 3 mpg more that with the stock 18" wheels and tires.
I weighed the 18's and 20's both with stock tires and the 20's are about 15 lbs heavier each. There's a lot more rubber contact to the road with the 275/55/20.
In about 6 to 7 weeks I will be making a trip to Littleton Colorado and back home. I'll find out then what the highway mpg is with the 20's.
The extreme heat hasn't helped in the fuel economy much either.

Looks sweet. I just bought an XLT myself. I've been saving some $$$ to upgrade to the exact wheel tire you installed, but I was unaware of the MPG being affected. I looked up the tire specs and the 20" tires are 9lbs heavier than the 18"s. The extra 6 lbs from the wheels (according to your info of the 20s being 15 lbs heavier) sounds about right. Are your numbers accurate or just your estimates ? Maybe an extra lead in your foot due to the better ride with the wheels ? Please let us know if you have any real numbers, I want to know what I am getting into. Thanks
The lower fuel mileage probably has to do with the fact that my truck has a 4.6 engine. I would imagine the added rubber making contact with the road has more to do with the loss fuel mileage. On the fuel mileage loss, I was estimating it from my average fuel mileage reading on roads that I frequently drive on. That’s why I said about 2 to 3 mpg. The actually could be only 1.75 mpg by a hand calculator. I haven't been very worried about it around town especially with all the extreme heat we've has. All of our roads are asphalt and the roads are hot and sticky. I would imagine that will create some drag on wide tires.

Any Change in Smoothness of Ride?
You did a great job on the upgrades, I thought it was a Lariat at first! I have a '10 XLT as well and am thinking about upgrading from the 18" chrome clad wheels to the 20" Platinum wheels...
When you went up to the 20" wheels, did you notice a change in the quality/smoothness of your ride? I really like how smooth the ride is right now and I don't want to loose too much of that.
