No fabrication Ipad Mini Install
First, I've read every single ipad/tablet mod on this forum, I think. Anyway, I set out to install an Ipad Mini, but have no fabrication skills. After reading the Genos Tablet install thread, the Metra kit fit a Xyboard almost perfectly out of the box. The problem was the Metra used to only be flat black. I have a 12 FX4 so it has the gloss black with a slight pattern. The new metra Kits have different colors including wood grain and glossy black. Which enabled me to take this on myself. There are some great fabricators on the forum if you want to remove your ipad. I didn't really find a reason to do it, I have a full size I use most of the time. Especially since it was 1/5 what the nav system would cost
I purchased a high gloss kit and used some weather stripping to 'build up' around the bezel, attaching it to the back of the bezel with 3m tape. This gave the ipad a little more surface area to stick to instead of the thin plastic on the cut-out. I then used the same 3m tape to attach the ipad to the weatherstipping/plastic. Attached the lightning cable to a USB-2 mod and put the connection in the glove box.
Anyway, took about 30 minutes to 'fabricate' and about 1 hour to install. With the high-gloss kit, it looks factory. Kit was 30 bucks on ebay and tape/stripping was $15 total.

Looks really nice.
I thought about installing the IPad mini , but I don't drive the truck enough to take advantage of all the cool stuff it would do.
I'll just put that money towards the truck payment.

Someone asked about if the controls could be re-located in the front of the center console. Here's a picture of it on top, sorry for the bad picture. Basically it is larger than the pocket in there. It has been done, but I think the console would have to be heavily modded.
For me, the re-route of the wiring harness was just a little short to put the controls in the glovebox, but looking at the wire bundle, it could have been done if I removed some of the wire loom. I can hook up the controls temporarily in the glovebox if i do need to change something. I just didn't use the controls much before. Setting radio/sirius stations and the sound menu are the only thing that I can't do from the steering wheel.
